Hi all,

Things are really serious now! And thus...

EMS MARCH 14th SEPTEMBER 2016

MEMORAMDUM
We, the men and women of the Emergency Medical Services, and the communities we serve (who today have demonstrated their solidarity with us), Hereby proclaim that the attacks against us must stop now!
For too long have our brave men and women of the emergency services had to endure attacks, violence and abuse directed against them. Our EMS and Firefighting staff were threatened, held at gunpoint and robbed of their personal belongings. This is done by the very same vulnerable communities who need our services the most. Today we reaffirm our pledge to the oath of service we have taken and now, joined by the concerned communities and their leadership, we say: ENOUGH IS ENOUGH - the attack on Emergency Services’ personnel must stop NOW.
This year alone, our ambulance services have had more than 80 cowardly acts of violence directed at them. These despicable individuals who claim to be ‘members’ of these very communities, have turned our staff’s own vulnerability against them - and this while our staff are only wishing to execute the mandate that the citizens of this city have given them.
We cannot wait before the community or the powers that be, take note and decide to do something about the situation. We want to act now - before someone is seriously injured, or worse still, before one of us is killed.
That will indeed be a sad day, not only EMS, but both for Cape Town and South Africa as a whole. We therefore stand up not merely for EMS in this province, but for all emergency services personnel across the country regardless of the discipline (fire, police etc.), province or company (public or private).
We proclaim that we are not the enemy here!
Those who are implicated in theses attacks are the true enemies of the community. They threaten the very fabric of our society which has already had to endure so much violence, and are an onslaught against the security of our state. They are our greatest threat as a country since their acts of violence have far reaching consequences that transcend geographical, cultural and political boundaries.
We know that we cannot withhold our service to the community. We know that we cannot deprive the innocent of our assistance and care and it is within these ethical mandates that we ask the city to assist in putting a stop to this blight on our society.
The concerned Men and Women of the Emergency Services
