well the easiest way is to configure the app to use a proxy, the more advanced apps all support this so if your app doesn't have a socks proxy option, find one that does. The different protocols are shaped differently.
lets take torrents, they don't shape torrents to 8KB, not per thread or overall, what they do is tamper with peer communications, so you ask to connect to a peer but the request is dropped before it ever gets to that person. So they limit you to say 3 or 4 threads, but if the peer is willing to give you 20KB, then you will get 20KB. So all you need a proxy for is to redirect that peer communication.
Ok now it gets a little more complex, with a bridge, you send the request to connect to a peer over the bridge to a proxy but thereafter all the data the peer sends will come direct to you... so you will get at whatever speed the peer sends and that your line can handle. however with a normal proxy the data (when i say data i mean the peices of the file you want) is sent through the proxy, then to you so you are limited by whatever speed the proxy can send to you. Fast proxy = fast torrent.
but bridges are complex and very app specific so here's a little test involvig a proxy you can do. start a torrent with lots of peopel on it you shoudl connect to about 3 people over time, no matter how many times you click 'update tracker' or 'manual update' with your client. then put a socks 4 or 5 proxy in your proxy settings within the torrent app (like azureus), immediatly you will notice you connect to as many peers/seeds you can handle. but your speeds as I said will be limited to how fast the proxy is, so find a fast proxy, russians have alot or you can buy access to some (free means you have to try a bunch before you find a fast one and it could go down at any time, paid for means it will be fast and reliable... so the choice is yours).
