love it to bits,

finding GPRS a lil slow but then again im use to ADSL.

question...how do use EDGE on vodacom
ie..how do i enable it, i just frustrated myself waiting on their support.
thx

We all know that Vodacom only has GPRS/3g and no EDGE.
However, i do remember reading somewhere on this forum that Vodacom is getting EDGE......wonder whats the reality.
V3g will know..v3g?

thanks man
bummer
okay, next q would be can i get it working on mtn prepaid then?

any idea when EDGE.vodacom will come our way?
thanks for your reply mate

Hello b@ndit. Welcome to the forum!

Last I heard Vodacom's EDGE coverage is on par with MTN's. Not all towers are EDGE enabled, and you wouldn't know if you are on an EDGE tower unless you can see higher than 80 kbps speeds. Do the Telkom speed test here: http://www.telkom.co.za/minisites/dsl/speed.html take the http one.
Or use/borrow a Nokia series 60 phone such as the 6630/80 with netmonitor which has a menu indicating whether a tower is EDGE or not.

Maybe pm Vodacom3g the tower id's (names) you pick up and ask him which of them are EDGE enabled. Then the trick is to make sure your phone gets its strongest signal from that specific tower!

Ok, then....Vodacom has edge...
If u want to use MTN with prepaid....simple..turn on CELL ID: if your Cell ID says the name of the place ( tower ) and also alternates and says YELLO BROADBAND or YELLO 3G, it has EDGE and you will be using it

EDGE coverage, countrywide, is currently in excess of 26%, which by the way is the highest EDGE coverage in the country. ;)

Western Cape is pretty much completely covered, so you should be OK in Cape Town.

V3g is there really EDGE in CT. I have as yet not seen/connected to an EDGE BS in Cape Town although I am mostly using 3G.

According to the coverage map I've seen, a large portion is covered by EDGE. On GPRS, CS3/4 is also deployed on most cells, so you should see faster than GPRS speeds.

In general the network is already fully EDGE capable, right up to MCS9 (>200Kb/s). In areas where it's not active yet, it's normally due to transmission not yet upgraded, awaiting our friendly Telco.

Edinetz, PM me a cell-id and I can check exact status for you.

would that map be available to us as well, v3g, or is it only internally for you guys? :)

baffled now
i just had a call from vodacom earlier and apparently EDGE will only be be available later this yr!
i know that they are pushing 3g and edge will be failover if 3g unavailable.
i want EDGE /EGPRS now man lol - GPRS is too slow

maybe they meant hsdpa? wouldn't really trust helpdesk statements like that ;)

i definately remember an article or thread somewhere where, as v3g mentioned, it was said that vodacom's national edge coverage is actually slightly better that mtn's. tried to find it now, unsuccessfully, but will try again later...

just bought mtn pay as you go and can see "yello broadband"
now just need to enable data on my line (helpdesk really busy itseems)

bit unfortunate that i had to go this route just to use EDGE
tsk tsk

will feedback soon.

Egprs is doin just great down here

;) Hi guys i know you guys are trying to use EDGE but ill tell you that when im not using 3g or no 3g signal that im using the Egprs at 115 kbps really works well V3g any news on when Kzn will go EDGE active?

Bundy2005 (hope your first name is not Ted!), we'll need to check with the banana boys on their plans. As far as I know they're pretty far down the line.

This morning Alan Knott-Craig, showed an EDGE map on Summit, so I should be able to post one as soon as I get an updated map. Western Cape and Central Region is well covered, other regions not so.
