Hi Celine

Even the most experienced psychiatrists will openly admit that medication, in the field of psychiatry, is [-]an art-form at best[/-] not an exact science.

Mental conditions can be approached in different ways. The chemical way compares signs and symptoms with historical data and, based on that, a preliminary concoction of drugs are prescribed. The condition of the patient is supposed to be monitored and the dosage/mixture adjusted. What constitutes as "successful" treatment of the patient is another discussion all together. (If all else fails, pump them with happy pills...)

Whatever you get prescribed from a psychiatrist are basically all happy pills, but better than long term suffering, don't you think? Or can you think of alternative treatments for severe mental conditions?

I asked a family member who was present during the altercation with my sister whether she thinks I was mean to my sister for saying the things I said. She answered that she doesn't think I was mean and that she thinks my sister needed to hear these things.

My sister always rationalises her behaviour, turns herself into the victim, and blames everybody else for the things she does.

that's called denial.

My sister took a paracetamol overdose a few days ago and she has been drinking heavily over the past two days. This happened because her boyfriend left her after she attacked him with a knife. She is mentally very ill. Now she is very sick from the paracetamol and the alcohol. She has abdominal pain, nausea, etc.

We told her she needs to go to hospital but she doesn't want to go. We told her she might have liver damage but she doesn't care.

I have some N-acetylcysteine tablets. How much should we give her until she comes to her senses and goes to a doctor, in order to help protect her liver? I have given her a single dose of 3000 mg so long.

From what I have just read on the internet, an oral dose of 140 mg / kg body weight should be give. If I understand this correctly, she needs to take at least 10000 mg or so of N-acetylcysteine. But this seems like an insane amount.

Holy crap Jamal.

I've no-idea, I'd imagine at least phoning a medical professional at this stage to get an opinion is probably a very good idea.

How old is your sister? Sorry, can't recall if you've mentioned it already.

You can't take responsibility for other peoples actions or their faults etc, even if they are family. They are actually the bastards as they inflict this trauma on all those around them.
