Kissing e-tolls goodbye could increase e-tag uptake

The shutdown of Gauteng's open road electronic toll (e-toll) gantry system from 12 April 2024 could lead to increased adoption of the electronic tags (e-tags) that will still be useable at conventional toll gates on long-distance routes across South Africa.

That is the view of the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse's CEO Wayne Duvenage, who believes the tags will now prove more popular due to their benefits at toll plazas operated by the three major concessionaires.

Might get one myself. They're convenient when you can bypass the long lines at toll gates and it should reduce those congestion if they open up more auto lanes. No need to get stuck behind some moron who arrives at the toll booth and then seems to wonder where they are as they then start looking for money backing up the line when they'd been waiting there for 10minutes.
 
Remember the tolls don’t have card machines.

If you are doing a long distance trip, an e-tag actually works very nicely, and is very convenient.

Are you sure? Some even have tapping now. Remember to update your advice file.

E-tags will also likely save on fuel if one of those e-tag lanes where you don't have to stop and speed up again.

They do in dedicated lanes. But last I heard though you needed special garage cards.
 
Why isn't OUTA focusing their sights on getting rid of all the other toll systems now? There shouldn't be toll roads anywhere. We pay taxes for the roads, we shouldn't have to pay toll fees on top of that.

Nothing wrong with the payment method. It was the etoll system.

I'm not against toll roads. The problem with the Gauteng roads were they were existing roads without proper alternatives. Also we should look more into corruption with the existing tolls as I don't believe the price justifies the service.

Eish guys, the amount of misinformation here, yoh.

There are Etag lanes and conventional payment lanes (I.e. Manual) that take cash and cards, and then you get card only lanes at certain toll gates.

Petrol and credit cards are accepted, not sure about debit at the manual booths though

It depends on what your definition of a "debit card" is though. They will accept any card as long as it has a Visa or Mastercard logo on it, including debit cheque cards. The "debit cards" they don't take are the ones with a "Visa Electron" or "Maestro" logo on them, but most banks no longer issue those. Even Capitec issues proper "Mastercard" cards now that work wherever credit cards are accepted.

Last time I was at a toll gate they didn't. I was then told you need a petrol card for some reason.

Which toll gate was this?

Have never ever been asked this before, maybe like 20 years ago
