Endocrinologist R1500 per consult

Hey, I haven't been feeling great. My hormone levels arent at optimal level and having thyroid issues. My GP suggested that I see an endocrinologist.

I call the office to make an appointment. Her consultation fee is R1500, I have to make an upfront payment and then claim from medical aid. Is this rate normal?

I don't want to deplete my medical aid benefits either.

Normal - get some vaseline while u at it, specialists will suck up all your savings from medical aid
 
Wait till you do blood tests - you will be looking at probably a minimum of R5k on blood tests.

EDIT: How do you know that you are having thyroid issues? If you are having thyroid issues, then you need to see an endocrinologist. A GP will not be the best person to help you. Expensive, but your only choice. Your blood tests might be a bit cheaper if he is only looking at thyroid tests, but sometimes they will order a wider range of tests in case the cause is actually something else.

I have been to a few specialists and it can be any amount of time. At most 30mins and thats being generous.

It doesn't matter if they see me for 5minutes.They will still charge the full rate.
 
Paid R1 600 for a urologist consultation. Was 30 minutes maybe. So sounds about right

My GP is pretty good and she requested an array of tests.

I want to see an endocrinologist to help my mind be at ease aswell.
 
I will be calling many endocrinologists tomorrow and query rates. The cheapest wins.

I do something sneaky whenever I visit doctors.I make basic conversation with them and refer to "patients" as customers. Only 1 has corrected me so far.
 
Dermatologist charged me R900 for the visit and got out her nitrogen gun. Every time she pulled the trigger it was R80 so the final bill was R1780

Lol, we had about 20 warts shot off my son's hands last year at a dermatologist. 1st visit R900 all incl, 2nd visit R700 with shots to 4 warts that never went away.

Apple Cider vinegar and masking tape. It might work.

Was referred to a cardiologist, by my doctor, to make sure that my hypertension was not being caused by anything other than crap genes....walked in with about R10 500 in savings...walked out with R 7.50...ultra-sound of heart, ECG, consultation...let me not even get started on the blood work that followed...

I went to one and I paid R1900 upfront then I was told that I still owe a further R900. I only saw her for about 15 minutes

I will have to follow up with my gp and find an affordable endocrinologist.

It will affect my daily benefits and I need my daily benefits.

People who are 100% healthy are so ****ing lucky. I have too much stress in my life for someone my age.
 
I dont have that big a problem with some doctors and hospitals being very expensive. What I have a bigger problem with is the way the financial part is communicated (or actually, not communicated). They tend to just do procedures or book stuff without letting you know what the costs will be. More often than not you only find out afterwards when you get the bill. Or dr will book a procedure and give you the codes for medical authorisation and only then do you find out you have a R2k co-payment for this and that. I think the lack of price communication is because of the fact that they accept that your medical aid is paying for everything. You dont really have a choice after the fact though if your medical aid doesn't cover XYZ pathologists that that doctor used for your blood test.
