So this weekend I'm going to an engagement party. its the first time I'm going to one... is it customary to bring a gift for the couple? On their invite it wasn't specified whether gifts should be brought.

Any ideas for a gift? I'd like to get one gift for the both of them.

I have never heard me such a Victorian occasion happening in this day and age. Sounds like a trap.

A gift is customary but needn't be extravagant. I usually give something like a set of inexpensive champaign flutes - you'd be surprised how handy they are when the bubbly gets served that day. :)

Personally I think its a way for the bride-to-be to set up her single friends!
jk

Those flutes look good! Would a voucher to a nice restaurant be acceptable?

It's always customary to bring gifts to a semi or formal party like this.

The gift will depend on what they need, for instance if they have been living together for a while and have bought most of the stuff needed in the house then its not a good idea to buy something that probably wont match or worse they already have. The best way to find out what to get them is to maybe ask if them if they need something specific.

When people start out cash is always welcomed but if you think its a bit impersonal maybe a gift basket with chocolates and biltong.

I would definitely do that. It would be a huge laugh. Except if the groom-to-be lacks a sense of humour and is twice your size, then you're stuffed :)

haha he is twice the size of me but he does have a sense of humour. I don't think this shirt can be found on short notice though, it would be classic to wear!

I'm sure you can find those shirt-shops somewhere :)

Something for the couple - we received a lil wedding planning book (which kinda came in handy)...

Most bookstores keep them

I have never ever been to an engagement party....is it the norm to have one?

I think so :o

I got engaged a while ago and before I knew it my girlfriend and her mom planned an engagement party. I never even knew people had engagement parties.

Lots of my friends also asked me should they bring gifts and I told them I have no idea. Most of them brought alcohol though and gave cash as a gift.

I would say a mall gift card as opposed to a store gift card, it just gives the coupleote variety in what they can buy
