Engagement Party

Between the wedding and the engagement party we received R20000, no complaints here.

My point exactly...It is also amazing how people you haven't had contact with for 3 years suddenly invite you to baby showers. People will do anything for free sh*t.

Guess they figure someone has to pay for the party - may as well be the guests :D.

We only invited close friends and family, 50 people for the engagement and 60 people for the wedding. Most of the money came from parents and two or three friends. The cost per person was still way more than what we received.

Always is but a small down payment doesn't hurt :). Better than getting cr@ppy gifts you'll never use. Still have an awful bowl that just won't shatter when dropped :D.

We lived together for two years before getting married and we already had most of the household items we needed. We actually said in the invite that people should only give money or gift cards.

I have never ever been to an engagement party....is it the norm to have one?

Only if you want free stuff from your friends. To the guy its about the free stuff, to the wife-to-be its about bragging rights (how big the ring is, how big the wedding is going to be, how lame her nieces wedding was, etc)

I won't take a gift, maybe a bottle of wine. You never know if you're gona go thirsty.

I ended up getting them a small box/chest and inside was an assortment of chocolates and biltong, along with a gift card. Thanks for the suggestions!

So this weekend I'm going to an engagement party. its the first time I'm going to one... is it customary to bring a gift for the couple? On their invite it wasn't specified whether gifts should be brought.

Any ideas for a gift? I'd like to get one gift for the both of them.

Skip the engagement party and go straight to the bachelor party, since you're in Durban for his present take him to Point Road at 1am, if you know what I mean ;)
