Engagement ring question

Just pop the question, then go and chose the ring together. It's better that way. Hollywood started the buy the ring first nonsense. If the ring isn't to her taste, it will be hard for her to tell you that.

"If a man is alone in the forest, and he says something, and there's no woman there to disagree with him. Is he still wrong?"

It's best to have the ring at the same time.

If it is bought from non-franshise stores they generally resize on site so the it can be done in a short time.

Or better yet just don't pop the question at all, enjoy things as they are and save yourselves the time, hassle, obligation, expectation and money that marriage will cost you...

Shame, your marriage must suck. Mine is awesome!

Who bit your b0ll0cks off & made you more sour than a green lemon?
Nobody, I'm in a great relationship :)

Not married and never will be. I'm glad it's working out for you.

lol, i bought a ring for my then GF about a month before popping the question and about a week before popping it, we were walking passed a jewellery store and she wanted to look inside, you know how unmarried chicks are, so i humored her, to my horror there was a ring exactly like then one i had already bought, so i told her that is a nice ring and she was like WTF, thats the ugliest ring i have ever seen!!!!!
Hahahahahahaha!

Don't worry about the ring size now... its very quick and cheap to have it sized to her finger. Any jeweller can do this for you!

Did not read entire thread ... but this is what i would do

1. Buy the ring slightly bigger - easier to resize.
2. Take it to any jeweller - and the resizing is cheap and fast (if they have an in-house goldsmith)
3. Most jewellers do the resizing for your free anyway.

I would just steal one of her rings and use it as a guide to get the right size using the set of ring measures that the jeweller keeps.

This is like the fourth of fifth engagement ring thread the last couple of weeks... is there something in the air?
How sure are you your girlfriend is not on mybb and has cracked your identity?
It's the holiday vibe man, everyone seems to want to proposed when they're in that relaxed mode :) And I'm pretty sure she's not on mybb :D
Yeah, would have done it anyway though. Thanks man! :)

If you don't know what kind of ring your future wife likes then maybe it's not a good time to propose? Just asking, use it, don't.

I suggest don't use it - see the "choosing a ring together" idea as another thing to learn of your future wife. Very few couples discuss wedding rings during dating - and as soon as you bring it up (unless you're VERY discrete about it) - you might as well pop the question immediately and choose the ring together. Most ladies will see that discussion as "he wants to marry me!"

Be romantic and give her an obviously fake ring and spin a story about choosing it together and making an adventure of it. Perhaps something from a lucky packet. ;)

I would hope you at least know her tastes before proposing, it's one of he simpler things to know about a woman. It can get far more complex as I'm sure everyone knows.

Romantic would be getting her a ring before hand. Myself and my wife discussed rings ages ago. What she likes, designs, metal etc. She's allergic to yellow gold, well so she says so it had to be 18ct white gold. I got it made a month before I proposed. Every single one of my married mates have done it that way as did my father and my brothers.

Tell her you want to get a ring for yourself, like a thumbring or something. Take her to a jeweller with you to fit a ring. Get the jeweller to give you the finger measure bunch'o'rings thingy. Measure your finger and say something like "wow, my fingers are huge, how big are yours?" Hopefully this gives you the opportunity to measure her finger and she's none the wiser. :)

So a quick update.

Myself and a few of our friends decided on a design that involves a main diamond, and three smaller diamonds in a row on either side, with the band in 18 ct white gold.

The main diamond is 0.36 ct, colour G, and clarity VS2. The 6 smaller diamonds (three on either side of the main diamond) are 0.1 ct each. One of my buddies knows a diamond supplier, and he quoted a price of around R9k to have the design made, which I thought was very reasonable :)

Expecting it to be completed shortly before Christmas, which is unfortunately after I plan to propose, so I guess I'll be going the lucky packet ring route for the proposal.

white gold defnitely looks better in my opinion, and whats the cut?

All of them are round. Princess cut I feel is more of an acquired taste, so round was the safest option.

I just commissioned an engagement ring for my fiance' and I had to get really educated on diamonds before pulling the trigger. It is essential that your diamond comes with a GIA certificate as most other rating agencies will have a diamond rating that is not worth the paper it is written on. You can expect a difference of 3 colour grades and 2 clarity grades worse for non GIA diamonds.

ha, i went with a princess cut, but that was what she wanted. and a word of advice, put effort into the actual proposal, you put a lot of effort/time into getting the ring right but the ladies appreciate the "whole" package, no point in having a fantastic ring if you pop the question in the drive through queue at kfc
