Got an e46. I need to check my manual but I think it requires fully synthetic oil. I have used Magnetec(semi-synthetic), Edge and SLX before.

BMW is selling SLX [email protected]. So I need 7L's hence R482.79.
Castrol Edge is about R350 to R399 for 5L depending where one buys. So I will need 2x5L cos most dont keep 1L.
Anyone check out prices elsewhere recently for BMW approved oils?

7L?

what engine?

i would phone bmw make sure what they suggest, then contact autozone etc for pricing.

well i need 6.5L for the 328i.

forgot to mention the SLX has been pulled by Castrol. I believe so that only BMW sells it.

Do BMW now only allow you to use oil they approved? Surely if its fully synthetic you can use whatever brand you want?

just spoke to Castrol. the SLX is being repackaged as Magnatec Professional A3 5W-30. Midas Centurion does not stock it. trying Menlyn.

Menlyn also not stocking it. will get SLX from BMW.

Engen Xtreme and shell Helix ultra also meet BMW LL-01 certification.

Engen extreme is R199 for 5L at Checkers Hyper

Why spend all that money on an out of warranty BMW? Just use any other oil. No need to spend that kind of money.

cos its not about warranty, its about using the correct oil.

i just spoke to engen. they say the xtreme or mobil 1 is recommended for my vehicle.

Engen Oil Centre Midrand has stock of the xtreme but not mobil1.

20x500ml at R39.20 per litre so R392 ex vat for 10L. so checkers hyper still cheaper.

Engen xtreme is 5w where mobil 1 is 0w. Mobil also darn expensive. Personally Ive used engen xtreme in my car with no issues and ive now done 230000km. bmw 330i 2003 model. Also a slighter thicker viscosity is not a bad thing if youve done a few kilos on the clock.

i ended up paying R90 for 1l of SLX ... did i not feel like a knob after that!!!!
is there anything else we can use instead what is perhaps more cost effective
but still has the same quality?

mobil 1 is going for R107/L and they sell them in a 12L pack
I got about 340 000km on my bmw :o

use the correct spec oil (eg. 5w 40 / 5w 30 etc) for your car and make sure it says Fully Synthetic.

None of the checkers hypers here have the Xtreme. Liqui Moly going for R390 at midas for 5L.
