Wow just saw the Yamaha amp and speakers looks like I'll buy one piece at a time
You pay for what you get. Rather save up a bit end get something decent. I have a Yamaha rx-v456 and an extremely halt with it. It was the least expensive Yamaha a number of years ago but still pricey. I am so glad I didn't go for Sony/Samsung/LG HTIBs.

It is not good sound, its purely powerful....

We will steer brumabull in the right direction so that he gets something he is happy with for the long term

This man speaks the truth

I like new stuff but damn the receiver I want doesn't look like it's available yet and looks like it's gonna be pricey because it has 4k up scaling

Don't waste your money on things you won't need for at least 5 years...

4k sounds great, but the TVs will be ridiculously pricey for at least the next 3 years so don't bother with it.

Get a receiver that has decent HDMI inputs, decent quality components inside.. you will be surprised. I have a relatively basic Marantz NR1601 at home and it knocks the socks off my mates Yamaha at 3 times the price.. and we use exactly the same feature set.

Yamaha, Onkyo, Marantz... All good

Go to a place like HiFi Installations (Centurion) with your own music and let them treat you to a diversity of AV receiver and speaker combinations.

Besides, 4k up scaling isn't exactly uncommon. And even if it was, it's not a feature I'd base my decision to purchase an amp on.

Make sure the thing has enough power to drive decent speakers and enough inputs. Everything else is just icing on the cake.

Yeah I guess I got caught up in the 4k hype but that Yamaha rx-v777 does look good and then when I'm done buying that do I buy the same brand speakers or are any old make just fine

You can buy whatever speakers you want.. but its not just any old make...

Yamaha/Polk/Mission/Klipsch/B&O.... the list goes on and on...

You can use "normal" speakers as a first step and then when you have cash replace at a later date... my day to day speakers are a set of LGs for the moment.. but they are going to be replaced with a set of Missions probably in the future when I'm finished renovatng.

Some say, spend X on the AV receiver and X x2 on the speakers.

Haha if that's the case I'm in for one hell of a bill for my entertainment center better get insurance for all of it

Some say X x2 barely covers a set of good fronts, nevermind the rest :p

A R8k amp can drive a R16k set of front speakers perfectly well. Then add another R10k-R15k for the surrounds, 5k-10k for a sub...

Home theaters get expensive really quickly. If I was on a budget, I'd buy better speakers with an alright amp before buying a better amp but with Meh speakers.
Wouldn't get a more entry level amp with better speakers though. In that case, I'd sacrifice speaker quality which can be upgraded in the future in exchange for a better amp to form the foundation of my setup.

Interesting what people think of certain brands. I wouldn't do Paradigm, would just barely look at B&W and probably consider the MA above both. Amps I wouldn't look at Denan or Pioneer, consider a NAD and would go for Rotel over all three.

Sub I'd go Velodyne

I don't think I'd ever do an X X2 ratio - a 1:1 is ideal I'd say amp:front

Do an inexpensive Jammy/Maranz/Pioneer/whatever amp that meets your input requirement and start off with a well taken care of used set of floor standing speakers from the likes of MA, B&W, KEF, Castle etc. These often have better bass than cheap subs.

Then take some care with your room setup (most important) and you're off to a great start. You can add something simple for rears waiting for bargains to crop up on the av forums.

:D

I'm still rocking a 3020!

I used mine for my PC :D Last year the one channel conked out and I have not opened it up yet. A T751 took it's place for now, serious overkill for a PC :D

The 3020 I actually want to restore at some stage, new caps etc.
