What is a good entry level camera? Don't want to spend an arm and a leg. It is for starting photography, and would serve as an upgrade base for future purposes. Is the Canon 1000D a good buy?

I just got myself a Sony S1900 from Game yesterday for R900 (excluding memory, case, etc).

Very basic. Unless you want to be like Bwana and get yourself this

Not particularly - it's a little basic.

If you want to shoot canon I'd suggest picking up a second hand 450D and kit lens, then figure out what area of photography interests you the most, and then make subsequent purchases accordingly.

How much you willing to spend? Specials are everywhere atm for a 500D with 2 lenses, etc. Haven't seen it for more than 5k.

At the moment I'm leaning toward a Nikon D5000. As this camera will be used eventually to hopefully take some professional level photos..

You'd be hard pressed to find any new camera these days that wasn't capable of taking "professional level photos" - the onus is on you. ;)

I must admit that the 3 year warranty from Cameraquip makes them the preferred supplier fo anything I might want in the future. Absolutely brilliant
