What is a good entry level camera? Don't want to spend an arm and a leg. It is for starting photography, and would serve as an upgrade base for future purposes. Is the Canon 1000D a good buy?

LIke a mate of mine says, if he wants a printer he'll buy a Canon otherwise it's Nikon all the way
Not particularly - it's a little basic. What is a good entry level camera? Don't want to spend an arm and a leg. It is for starting photography, and would serve as an upgrade base for future purposes. Is the Canon 1000D a good buy?
How much you willing to spend? Specials are everywhere atm for a 500D with 2 lenses, etc. Haven't seen it for more than 5k.

You'd be hard pressed to find any new camera these days that wasn't capable of taking "professional level photos" - the onus is on you.At the moment I'm leaning toward a Nikon D5000. As this camera will be used eventually to hopefully take some professional level photos..
This is the cheapest I've seen the D5000 with lens:
