Entry-level DSLR decision

Hi guys

I've made the decision to move from my trusted Fuji S3500 and get into the DSLR market. Unfortunately due to budget constraints, i can only really afford one of the entry level DSLR camera's with a kit lens at the moment.

But how do i decide between the Oly E-420, Nikon D60, Canon 1000D and Sony A200/A230? All of which are more or less available for the same price.

I'm leaning towards the Sony's because of their built-in IS, but not sure if this is a big enough reason to discard the D60 and E-420.

Any thought or comments will be appreciated.
Go to your local camera shop and see how well they fit in your hand.
20D/30D's still are super camera's and will blow most entry level camera's out of the water, and you won't take a huge bath on depreciation etc.
Hold their own maybe but blow away?

Agreed! The 20Ds are good cameras no doubt and in the hands of a pro they can still produce awesome images. However, I find that there are some features that on newer lower entry models that would be more helpful for beginners.

One is the LCD. While on the 40D i could get enough of a feel for how the picture will look, it doesn't do any justice to what it actually comes out as when downloaded and checked on the PC. The 50D and the newer entry level LCDs on the other hand are just so awesome!

Then the newer entry levels support higher ISO. And yes, they might not be as 'clean' ito noise. But it does let a beginner get away without having to use multi-source lighting or dedicated flashes.

Is this a good price?

No, I'm an amateur. Don't need a backup. If I was a pro I would be using a D700, and the D90 would be my backup. :D I'm dreaming again! :o

Yes your an amatuer and im a beginner. Im dreaming of the freaking D90 :o

I'm currently sitting in the lounge at Johannesburg Airport. They have a special this month on the D90 with 18-105 VR lens for R12999. I saw this a week ago and I actually decided I'm gonna buy it today. But of course now everything is sold out:(

BTW: Anyone knows how much are the import duties from BHPhoto ?

The D90 has a better exposure meter, but if you learn your exposure meter and compensate for it the D60's shots will look exactly the same. Remember, it's about composition, timing and lighting, not about a camera. These cameras have almost identical image quality.

:( Damn man. Hope you can get that special or something akin to it somewhere else!

You have a D90 and you're dreaming of a D60?

Lol, D700. You spent way to much time in the UK.

I have a feeling that the IQ of the D90 would be better than the D60 because of the sensor. D60 is CCD, D90 is CMOS.

I think I'll have a give-away if I ever manage to upgrade my 400D . . . that is if there's anything left of it by then :)
