Entry-level DSLR decision

lol ;)
I meant buying online and shipping to SA (I haven't been to the US since 2002)

Camera equipment and lenses are supposed to be duty free. You are then charged VAT on the (total amount + 10%). In addition you have to add +- R100 for the courier handling fee.

You can go onto BHPhoto and then add the items to a cart and select the shipping you want... then your final cost is

(((<cart total> X 1.154) + <shipping>) X Exchange Rate) + 100

I know lenses are - how sure are you that the bodies are too?

According to the SARS customs and excise doc I downloaded, 'cameras with a motor drive' are exempt. P&S cameras with electronic shutters might not be. I can't find a specific category that falls into.
A dSLR doesnt have a motor. AFAIK motor drives are for film.

Yeah could be. I thought motor drive referred to the mechanism that drives the shutter, which I'm sure is some sort of motor to move the mechanical shutters on a dslr. I'll look for the doc again and see what I can find wrt to digital cameras.

What about the auto-focus mechanism. Although I guess it's safer to assume that whichever duty is higher, is what they probably meant.
