Entry-level fibre price showdown

Mweb, Axxess, and RSAWeb generally offer the most affordable entry-level fibre packages across four of South Africa’s major fibre networks, a MyBroadband comparison shows.

We compared the prices of basic fibre packages from prominent South African ISPs across four open-access fibre network operators — Openserve, Vumatel, Frogfoot, and MetroFibre.

The ISPs used for comparison include Afrihost, Axxess, Cool Ideas, RSAWeb, Webafrica, Mweb, Telkom, and Vox.

There is no worse service provider than MWEB. I've got Herotel no problem so far R499 p/m 50mbps up/up get up to 60mbps when I download let's hope it stays that way.

According to another thread, vumatel is about to have another price increase.

Where overseas? Cheapest package I can get is about 35 EUR if fixed line, 100/20Mbps, there is a min price tier. Going below that requires going mobile data, where the cheapest is 20 EUR for up to 40Mbps.

There are costs involved with trenching cabling, engineers maintaining it, support staff, and then the licenses and switches that need to upgraded on a continuous basis, all while delivering a profit.

That said, providers like vuma are just ripping people off, trying to get all investment back in a couple of years instead of over a decade since this infrastructure will generally be there for another 30/40 years without issue.

Broadband projects should be government if a competent state, then ISP open access on top of it, but that's a too modern way of thinking, and in South Africa I would not want government involved.

I am also stuck with Vumatel, nothing else in the area. So for me to switch ISP's over a few bucks makes no sense due to down time.

Home connect has 30/3 on FF for R388. Too bad they have terribad service. Took over a week to get them to reply to a query about moving lines. Think I will just stay with AH till I leave RSA.
