Is this any good as an entry level PC?

INTEL G620 2.60GHZ 3MB CACHE, LGA 1155 64W

ASROCK INTEL CHIPSET H61M-VS R2.0 MOTHERBOARD
4 x sata
2 x memory slots
1 x pci exp slot
5.1 ch hd audio
built in visuals

2GB DDR3 MEMORY 1333 HYNIX

Is it better to go for a G840 rather than a G620?

That looks very basic.. It depends on the price.

Going for a faster processor is of course always better but again it depends on the price.

What is your budget?

I just saw Asrock (ASSrock) and skipped the rest. Not a big fan, sold a few to some people and had a lot of come-backs and complaints. Can not comment on this specific one though.

It all depends what you want to do with this pc? And what budget are we looking at? Am also not big fan of Asrock motherboards I would rather try to get a asus, gigabyte or msi mobo.Maybe try going for 4gig ram as ram isn't that expensive will really help with windows 7 if you are going to run windows 7 or vista.

For a entry level PC, try getting one with a Foxconn motherboard. They are on the cheap side, but quality is on the good side, really good side.

Just went through the Sahara's pricelist....they use to sell Foxconn. Wonder if they will ever get back where they were in the beginning.

Please. Asrock = Asus. Good stuff.

Sold tons and never had any comebacks...

Differentiate between Asrock and Foxconn quality please? I compared them next to each other before, looked the same to me.

2gb is not enough to run Windows these days. Tablets come with 1gb ram. It's not even entry level.

It all depends mainly on 3 things; the cost of the above, how much you have to spend and what you will be primarily using it for...

Tomshardware test and review of the ASRock H61M-VS;

Its just to run our day to day activities (using XP)- emails, office that kind of stuff. We also do a bit of text to speech conversions. We do have a gforce graphics card and may play some older games like thief, but nothing new.

On that I see that this only has one PCI slot and one PCI-express- is that correct? so can I use my graphics card and still insert something else- eg a pci-to-pcmcia card?

this is a replacement for a lightning damaged pc- insurance paid out already (see below) so I have around R1800 to work with.

That mb, chip and RAM combo should cost about R1000.

We have been quoted R1840 for this. Where can I get it for less because Matrix looks to be about the same price?

The problem is that we bought and paid for something from these guys. They put redundant stock in, and now they are swapping it out for us, so unless I fight for my money back(which is sounding like a good possibility now), Im going to have to go with them.

If we go for better makes- Asus motherboard with something like kingston ram, what should we expect to pay? Please bare in mind that My hardware knowledge is limited and so I need to include installation and all that onto the price. (which also goes for what they have already quoted us)

Those items were on special at Sahara (the distributor) this week.

That kind of PC should be fine for your average web browsing, word document kind of PC.

I think you should fight for the money, I would not trust these guys. Someone on the forum here could probably help you out building a PC.

Ave... there is a big difference between retail and dealer prices... I think that a lot of the comments here are referring to dealer prices.

R1800 does seem a bit steep for that mobo, chip and RAM... but I assume it is also includes a new case and PSU (maybe a new optical drive too?)... a neighbour purchased an entry level G620 system from Matrix for around R2200 which included a new 250GB hard drive and DVD writer as well as the mobo, chip, RAM, case + PSU.

That little system will be good for a lot of things, not just word, excel, email... it is surprising what the new Celerons can do... just do not expect to do much gaming and the like. Even the newer integrated VGA boards can do quite a bit now days.

If you have some available funds, I would suggest topping-up the R1800 for the more trusted Asus / Gigabyte boards and getting a good PSU.

Maybe if there is a forumite in your area with a dealer account, and you can extract yourself from your current supplier / predicament... put these funds towards a system recommended by those in-the-know here and save some money.

Or even sign-up with Esquire... and get whatever is recommended on the forum from them yourself... ? Esquire can even put it together for you for a fee I am sure.

Take the money and run!
