My GF recently inherited my pc allowing us to play games together, are there any good story-heavy RPGs we can play together? Preferably not MMO, something in the vein of Baldurs gate/ Icewind Dale but perhaps a bit more recent, with a learning curve that isn't incredibly steep

Torchlight I / II? I think games like Fable might be a bit too simple with their character building for what you're after.

Titans Quest, maybe not the best story and is old but the learning curve is not hard.

Divinity - Original Sin is a very cool 2 player RPG, and torchlight 2 is a cool action RPG

Outside of RPG, awesome co-op experiences on the PC are Left 4 Dead 2 and Portal

Play some D3 with her, no real learning curve and you can play together.

2 scenarios.
By play together you mean you sit next to eachtother and enjoy the story and game together, I would suggest Pillars of Eternity, the most Icewind Dale/ Baldurs gate game there is.
Kingdoms of Amalur.

If by play together you mean 2 pc's and you lan/ 2 player - then try grimm dawn, torchlight 2, Diablo 3. These are more action orientated but its fun to play.
EDIT: oh and as stated above, Divinity Original Sin. Wow what a gem!

How about the borderlands series? I know its more a FPS RPG, but you could play on a LAN as well

Torchlight,me and the missus have played it together for days

Baldurs Gate style rpg is not everyone. I remember i got bored with Baldurs Gate because one guy on the LAN would usualy do the talking and if you didn't keep track you'd not get immersed in the game and then it turns into a grind fest. Single Player the series was fantastic

I think Borderlands as suggested above is a good middle ground, nice flowing gameplay and it's easy for everyone to keep track of what's going on with the voice acting. It even has a official girlfriend class in the mechromancer xD

Also
+1 for Torchlight and Grim Dawn.
