Will this thing allow me to use it if I don't put any colour ink in?
It's new and never had ink in it and I honestly don't care about colour printing. I just wondered if it would complain or break if I just don't put colour ink in if I intend to print mono only.

After you filled the tanks and open first use the printer goes through a routine to charge the nozzles. It may detect that there is no ink in the tanks and ask you to fill the tanks. I have been using one now for more than 2 years and at first I always set it to print in greyscale only. Then one day I needed to do a colour copy and found the colour came out weird with clogged up and the colour came out weird the colour nozzels were clogged. Took me a while to flush and clean the nozzles and since then I made a point to do a colour print at least once a week. The colour ink supplied with the printer is enough for around 6000 colour prints. I suggest you fill the colour tanks and enjoy one of the best printers.

Thanks Nemesis, that sounds like sage advice.

I print everything in colour to keep the nozzles clean. A bottle of ink lasts so long I can never remember when I bought them.

Agree with Nemesys, just build quality I feel is a bit poor...I had an HP before... Mahindra vs Toyota.
I have had had it for 3 yrs still going.
Do do a weekly cloud print..you can reprint over previous pages to save paper.

I've heard of these a few years back and the price of the ink vs traditional inkjets made me interested.

But in the end I still preferred laser, reason being I have had bad experiences with inkjet printers before. Specifically the "other parts"; some have things like (I don't know the proper names) absorber pads, cleaner rolls, etc. that must be replaced after a certain number of prints, and they are very pricey too. Using generic ink refills then caused further issues.

Do these have the same issue or have they found a way to save us money here too? If so, I would definitely get one of these when my current laser packs up some day.

Hp make poor quality printers as well. There are different ranges.

Lasers have issues with Corona wires, feed rollers, (mainly heat related), toner cartridges etc. Printers all have to eventually be thrown away. For me it's the cost per page which used to be high with ink. Not anymore.

Fair enough. I guess I am biased in favour of laser printers due to my great experience with them. Never had any significant issues, even when using generic toner/drum units.

In any event, I browsed the Epson range now and the entry level ones definitely make sense for a home office. Will be on my future buying list.

I think it all depends on volume. If you're printing higher volume then be prepared to spend more on the machine regardless of the tech. IMO low end lasers can be as bad as low end inkjets. Even for home use I wouldn't expect much from anything in the sub-R3k range.
It is true that there are fewer high end inkjets and it's the high end machines that are ultimately serviceable. I personally wouldn't bother servicing a R3k or lower inkjet anymore... Just too much effort and labour wise it'll be more unless you DIY.

The Epson I bought came with a 3 year warranty. If it outlives that then I'm happy.

Does it have a model no.
Mine is a Epson L382 3 in 1 I paid R2499 for it which was a bit less than what I would have paid at incredible.
I had a quick look at Takealot and they have two models available The Mono is around R1800 and the colour around R3500

Re my comment on build quality:
I have only had HP or Canon in the past, (total of x4 printers) and of those is is the poorest Epson L565, ....but that said it is working sans any issues..so the appearance of poorer quality (to me) may well be wrong.

My expensive HP AIO is on bricks. It did last fairly long tho - about 5 years. Expensive cartridges tho.

I just realised I do have a complaint about my Epson L550. I use genuine Epson ink & photo paper, but the prints fade within a few months.
