I was just wonderin what would be the function of the mircofilter and do i need one at each point where i have a phone connected?
Also does one require a surge protection unit, what is its purpose?

Sweeet

ADSL uses a different frequency over your local loop copper wire. The POTS microfilter removes this frequency from any telephone or fax machine connected to it, otherwise you might hear static / background noise on your telephone.

I think it is also better for the ADSL connection to have this connected to your telephone to give you the optimal line speed to the DSLAM.

And the surge protection: not required, but if you live in a lightning-prone area ... like Gauteng ... it will give you some protection in the event of nearby strikes. Your ADSL modem and your powered devices (ie everything) are subject to surge damage and you'll have to replace them if this happens. Check your insurance, too - it may have a discount or a requirement for surge protection.

Of course, a direct strike is likely to fry everything.

On the microfilter thing...
I had my phone line and adsl installed simultaneously the other day. I now have seperate sockets for phone and adsl, and two phone numbers for them. The guy said I don't need a microfilter, as long as I dont use the adsl one for a phone too. Is this standard Telkom procedure? I thought I'd get one line...

Very odd. ADSL runs on the same line as your phone line. Sounds like they installed 2 lines (since you have 2 numbers) which means you are going to be paying 2 phone line rentals.
