:( Please assist. Getting this dumb "Error 678: remote computer did not respond" error.

I have been on the line with Vodacom for hours trying to sort this but keep getting the run around. 1st they said download ver 9 then it WILL work. I did that and it still does not work. 2nd they said get a new sim card - done that still nothing - 3rd they said test the PC sees the modem and it said success - then put the modem in another laptop see if it works. I still get this 678error and now am out of ideas.

I am on pre-paid always have been and never had problems. This thing's warrantee is out I think so wot to do? Would Vodacom swop me for a new one or am I just bein nuts.

Firstly, what is the make & model of 'the thing', and did you download and install VMC version 9.1 or VMC version 9.2?

I could be wrong, but if you got a new SIM Card, you might need to ask 155 to Provision the new SIM Card for data on the internet APN.

PS: Welcome to MyBroadband :).

Model E620 - and Vodacom has already made provisions for it. I downloaded ver 9.2.1.6545.

So you've tested it with 2 different SIM's, and 2 different Computers.

So your next step is to test a totally different Data Card with the 2 SIM's and 2 Computers.

IOW, take the data card to Vodaworld along with PC if possible, or to a Vodashop and get them to sort the problem out...

Thanks. I think that's best. Will let know what the outcome is. Sigh Vodacare... here I come... again!

Maybe also scan for malware and check firewall settings that might be interfering with the connection.

Maybe totally useless, but what the heck

Take a look at Control Panel > Phone and Modem and take a peek at your modems properties. Under the properties there is a tab called advanced with extra settings. Make sure the following is typed in the space allowed:
AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet"

If these settings are removed for some reason you will get an error 678.

My 2cents.

I have ad-aware and spybot and NOD32 running - I have cleared the firewall for this Modem so all is ok there.. i see that the AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet" is typed in..
