So we stay on a farm and with the new tariffs from Eskom our network charge is around R6300 per month. And then we haven't used any power yet. We pay Eskom directly and on the bill it says we are on the Landrate 1 2 3 tariff.

On what basis is this network charge tariff implemented? Monthly usage? Is there any way to change this or are we just screwed?

There are three landrate tariffs (1, 2 and 3) - which are you on?
Seems to be dictated by your supply size.

On the bill it says "Tariff name: Landrate 1,2,3". What does this mean?

Attached is from last months bill.

So according to this, because we have a 3 phase meter supply, we get charged at a Landrate 3 tariff... Ai.

Thanks for the info Sinbad
Depends on the total supply size I guess?

How big (in terms of Amp rating) is each breaker coming into your meter box?

(I think I posted old prices, here are the new ones I think)

So yes, landrate 3. You must have 3 phase @ 150A per phase.

Ok, so I checked... It's a 100kva transformer (150A per phase). That makes sense. So to pay a lower network charge we'll have to get a smaller transformer installed, if our usage allows it. Since this transformer was installed back in the 90s the farmhouse had solar installed (not totally off grid), but we still have other things on the farm dependant on the grid.

Hi Tristan, we are in the same boat, Us EKSDOM direct rural customers are the milk cows.
We decided to bite the bullet and will soon cut the umblical cord. Make do with what solar we can manage.
With a generator for emergencies and shifting load to when the sun shines. Keep adding capacity where absolutely necessary till comfortable. Not paying for availability which is not guaranteed will make up for small inconveniences. Reliability in our own hands. Ons kan Self!

You can reduce your supply sometimes they will demand a breaker change sometimes not. I've had Eskom rural change to a ruraflex and change down from 1500kva to 500kva with no physical changes, just billing changes.

It depends on the management on your area as to whether you can do that easily or not. Their details should be on your bill / cover letter.

what is your kwh usages in a month ?

Don't you still have to pay connection fee, service charge etc.?
You need to cancel your eskom service but if you ever need to reconnect it they will charge you a massive fee

see what your total kwh usage is for the month, also see what your max usage is at one time (like a spike running a motor on the farm etc)
then just save up for a large 3 phase hybrid invertor, panels, batteries etc.

get
rid
of
eskom
completely

they're ripping the ring out of farmers and businesses, it's disgusting. And you'll save R6,300pm alone!

Ah so that's how it works. Tks.
You can also change fully to off grid and ask them to go prepaid, but you get limited to 1phase on prepaid with max I think 80 or 60 amp
