So this kind of goes in both software realms and eskom as the app is primarily around loadshedding etc.

Obviously with the return of load shedding this weekend and the last while, like many I reinstalled the app. They have been trying to expand thier app with chat functionality etc which is to me, understandable to grow the business model.

What makes me a bit uncomfortable lately, as my area is suffering water and other issues, is that the application is data mining user chats to generate interest cues including images shared in the chat.

Obviously to chat you need to register, which is actually quite a strong requirement from app stores for any social app but this seems to almost skirt that or bend that.

Maybe it's just me from being in a similar industry and having to do the hoops of store compliance, privacy etc but it actually makes me uncomfortable enough that I won't register to partake.

Not sure what others thoughts are, or I'm just being old fashioned. Not so much the summary but image etc seem a bit much.

Would the chat not be more like a public forum rather than group/private chats?
I don't think there is the expectation of privacy when people post on there vs a WhatsApp message as an example.

Since I reinstalled ESP it's run like molasses. Very, very slow and unresponsive. I have a otherwise decent fast phone.

They done fugged it up, imho.

Uninstalled it. Installed Loadsheddingnotifier instead.

Seems OK, with the added bonus of notifications direct from our municipality.

Never posted on ESP but if I was going to post there it would be because I'm either trying to get help or help other people. If my posts there are used in such a way as to be able to help other people it wouldn't really bother me- I'd feel like I was contributing to a public alert system and I don't really care how that system works.

Would probably bother me more if some random convo I was having on mybb was used on their frontpage to attract people.

Data mining? It’s just WhatsApp or Facebook group style alerts.

Well yes and no, forums is a good argument but take a Facebook or whatsapp group. Even if public, for those you need to be registered to access chat content.

With FB and what's, you can control the visibility etc. This feels a lot more shotgun.

There's nothing illegal , just for me it twigs something.

Confused on what the issue is here. It is not a private chat, the threads are visible to anyone. They use semi~meh AI to generate irritating alerts instead of just alerting me when there is loadshedding.

Would be similar to Mybb sending out a newsletter/alert on some of the posts here. I fail to see the privacy or compliance issue here,

Didn't say there was one, just not one that I'm comfortable with hence why I asked how others feel.

I think you're way too paranoid.

Also, congrats. You have made it into my Google feed with this nonsense. Next stop DailyInvestor.
