Eskom side-steps load shedding

Give him the benefit of the doubt So far IMHO he was the first ANC politician that made bold promises AND IT WORKED OUT SO FAR. Whether it was the luck of the draw matters little. Lets see in future.

Its not benefit of the doubt...

Its data... the demand for power has dropped to around 2008 levels if memory serves me correctly.. they have breathing room atm.

Winter is coming soon then we will see!

Eskom outages were avoided because usage this year has dropped so radically.

Molefe tried to claim credit and reject the 'evil imperialist media' for spreading lies, even though the revealing stats were published by Eskom themselves

Koeberg 2 may have been accelerated but Molefe's tetris graph showed it coming online 10 days ago. Therefore there was an unplaned delay. After 15 December, industry shuts down anyway so the timing was actually pretty poor. Contractors are expensive French imports.

At least Koeberg base generation is relatively cheap (not because nuclear is cheaper, but because it's 30 years old already).

Yeah big plants that closed like Bayside aluminium smelter and tata steel smelter which were huge electricity guzzlers reduced load a lot. That said for the first time it actually looks promising....

Supply looks promising but what are costs going to do. They will still have the same overheads plus extra costs of the experts they need to sort out the problem. Will they change from being a cadre employer back to being an efficient electrical utility?

Between 6 and 13 years ago, we use to have four conglomerate plants running along a 90km stretch of the Namibian coast.

These were all powered by ESKOM.

Each one of these plants consumed enough energy to power a small town of 10 000 people.....

Today we only have one of those plants in operation, with the others completely closed down.

I've never heard any other power utility company anywhere in the World that pats itself on the back every few days for simply doing what they are meant (and paid handsomely for) to do!

Weren't they selling electricity below cost for many smelters?

Still are, and will be for years to come. But not to worry, we the general public covers that loss and well as all the other losses(areas that don't pay and debt written off etc)

Indeed our electricity consumption is lower than it was in 2008, and we're still on edge. But he has made an improvement on his predecessors, nonetheless.

Yay an own goal, Eskom is selling less electricity due to lower demand which is a function of lower GDP and growth...

Happy holidays:(

(Guess who is still in the office dealing with buying kit in $...)
