Unions are up in arms, following Eskom offering staff a 0% increase. Worker representatives make the point that with the last inflation print at 4.5%, this means a 0% increase will actually translate into a decrease. Unions walked out of wage talks this afternoon. Eskom is in big financial trouble, holding debt of over R360*billion. For the company to become sustainable, analysts say it will have to cut costs right across the board, which may speak tot the company’s current wage position.

On the line I’m joined by Chris Yelland, an energy analyst at EE*Publishers, and Paris Mashego, an energy sector coordinator at the Num. Paris, let me start with you. What’s your response to Eskom’s offering of a 0% wage increase?

Quite in interesting topic that is going to escalate.

The specialist they got proves exactly why this is going to be a mess.
The union guy(Paris) is a complete idiot attempting to be racist and Chris Yelland almost manages to make him seem reasonable

Looted ****ed up, gg ANC... don't think eskom can ever recover, constantly looting and increasing tariffs to cover it is what has made this mess, increasing tariffs to keep it floating just speeds up the fall... we're all ****ed at the end of the day

They won't take this lying down for sure, and rightfully so, they aren't the one who engaged in corrupt activities with the Guptas.
 
Are they cutting the pay of board members and executives? The major slicing should start from the top.

They're playing politics, using the employees to get their 20% so they can loot more, thats all, holding country to ransom, making sure riots start guarantees it
 
I must fill my gas bottles and make sure my backup is ready, the workers have my full support. What is Solidaritreit's stance here, taking the 0%?
 
So based on conjecture here:

a) Eishkom wants fat increase... not likely to get it
b) Rile up the workers with 0% increase so they're jolly well p1ssed off and some start sabotaging things..
c) Sabotage leads to loadshedding
d) Eishkom goes to court, NERSA caves in
e) Public/business cannot handle loadshedding, so they STFU and take the increase in tarriff
f) Loadshedding (embargo) is gone...

Brilliant typically ANC plan...

Simple maths really.

Don't give an increase and 100% of the work force is employed for another year. Give 5% increase and retrench 5% of the work force. Either way they can't afford an increase, so the unions pushing for an increase are just pushing for retrenchments. Simple as that.

g) increasing unemployment and economy shrinks even more, resulting in less revenue, so need to increase tariffs, rinse repeat

And the idiots can't see the circle they've created for themselves

Criminals have no wealth generation skills so blackmail is seen as a valid business plan..
 
How about an across the board wage freeze. The whole economy. Every sector ? :)

Why do sectors who can afford an increase have to be punished? Did you even think your suggestion through before making it public?
