Eskom starts load shedding

I am NOT turning off my aircon during the day! Electricity is supposed to make our lives easier, but Eishkom has screwed that up too! "I didna come heer ta die for these bastards!"
Last night I spent about 30mins on their crappy little load shedding schedule but in the end I just ended up checking almost every region. Where the hell is Brooklyn on that map? I don't know which part of Gauteng I exactly fall into and it seems to be split into 3 regions!
Btw. the reason they don't charge by peak/off-peak is probably because most businesses are open during peak hours. Also do you really save that much electricity by turning off a geyser? The plumber told me those things have a 1 degree celsius drop every 4 hours or something along those lines (well the new ones, because the insulations is very good), which mean it probably goes on every 4 hours for a few minutes at most. If anyone has more knowledge in this area I'd be interested to hear tho.

I've seen it mentioned that it takes more electricity to heat up a cold geyser full of water than to just keep it warm all day; that would fit in with what you're saying.
Personally, there are 2 reasons I don't switch of my geyser: (1) I want hot water when I get home, not a few hours later; and (2) the switch is all the way out in the garage, and I'm not going out there in the dark after my bath/shower just to switch it off. If it really does use that much electricity to keep it warm, they need to either put switches in more accessible places, or add timers (also in an accessible location), and preferably even allow you to change the preset temperature at will (in, you've guessed it, an accessible location).

Constantia Mall is in darkness and they are removing the ice-cream from the freezers. P&P & Woolies are still working though.
That's assuming your load is essentially the same every month (which is impossible to determine unless you have a VA/Watt- hour measuring device connected to your geyser)
Are they giving some away or just taking them out?
And for this service you will get a +18% increase in tariffs next year, just in case you are not peeved off already.
The R20Billion for SAMS or the R2Billion squandered by the Land Bank could have been useful round about now.
Oh and if you think your pocket is not been squeezed enough Tito would like to jack up interest rates next month. Mboweni in favour of another rate hike

Lol. I only use about R150 of electricity, so I can't see how I could save R200 by switching off my geyser

I am starting to wonder if these guys have even a clue of what they are doing.
According to the Reserve Bank Interest Rates are the only tool they have to curb inflation?
It may be true, but if it costs more to service debt then that is also inflationary?
It is really a vicious circle. If there was no volatility in the market places the rich couldn't make money as fast as they do.
If you had to take the growth we have enjoyed since 2002 or slightly earlier much of it could be attributable to the stability of lower interest rates?
In my opinion much of the short term inflationary pressure is Business trying to stay profitable and the rise in food prices and oil.
In order for Business to drop prices you either need very stiff competition and/or their costs dropping like the cost of money (Interest Rates) and their operating expenses which includes Labour.
I am not sure what we or the Reserve Bank can do about high food prices and certainly our Government has no control over the cost of oil. In actual fact the stronger Rand has absorbed a lot of the higher International Oil Prices, but once again this could also be short term as next year The Rand for all we know could depreciate.
The new NCA (National Credit Act) is a couple of years too late. Had this been in place back in 2002 the picture may be different now, but then again would everybody have been so spendthrift again knowing the added criteria that goes with the NCA in getting credit.
Re SARB.
I think they know very well what they are doing.
The shareholders get more money. After a few years of good growth in the economy SARB Shareholders will want to capitalise on raising rates with the excuse that inflation is out of control.
Can the SA Reserve Bank also print money from nothing like The Fed?

2)Power demand goes up 10% (I think) per year.
3)Supply stays constant for at least the next few years.
And with the above 3 as a starting point, they go and build a farking aluminum smelter that chows power like crazy. I just smile and wave nowadays.

Sure, but how could they possible see the effects of the last hike seeing as it happened such a short while ago.
I don't see the sense it raising it without giving it some time in between to settle down. There must be alteria motives at work.

My concern is that they may start charging according to a sliding scale like they did with Water using the Capacity Issue as their motivation.
Residential use is a small percentage of the National Grid as far as I know, so this is maybe not appropriate. More the case of Big Business (Smelters etc) that use up the bulk of the Capacity who pay less than Residential Users. In actual fact from what I have read Residential may be subsidizing Big Business who negotiated cheaper rates when The Grid had extra Capacity during the 90's.
