Eskom stops new developments

And for the next 6 months how many people will have no work?
And how many companies will close?

And how many jobs are going to be lost overall in the short to long term.

I will just hold onto this stick for as long as Charles whathisface allows me to, and wave it as much as needed. The guavamint is nothing more than a useless collection of non-thinkers who will maintain their jobs while thousands of others lose theirs through the ineptitude of the said officials.

What do you suggest they do in the short to medium term Moederloos?

For a start - fire the incompetent morons that put us in this position.
In fact, do just that, and I will happily "tow the line" with these other proposals.

My idea: grant MASSIVE subsidies on solar and wind power... I reckon within 6 months we will have a totally different picture! I for one would be off the grid, and I think so would be a lot of people!

Then, break Eishkom's monopoly on power supply... allow some competition, and allow other companies to generate power and sell to whomever they want. Currently, you are allowed to generate power only and only if you sell to Eishkom.

More ideas?

Good ideas that have been tabled and are being considered.
Alternative energy will take some time, the buy back scheme can immediately alleviate a lot of pressure and this will happen. Through ESKOM or independently is another story though.

Have a problem with the buy back scheme: If I generate enough (solar/wind/whatever) power to be able to sell surplus, why can't I sell to my neighbor? Why am I forced to sell to Eishkom?

Actually it's one of the most positive things that Eskom have done in the recent past. First law of project management is: "if you don't know what's going on. STOP".

Eskom need to slow development and figure a sense of priorities. This move will give them breathing space. Recently development has been uncoordinated and higgeldy piggeldy (love that expression) and some order needs to be created.

You guys are in for the long haul. I'm afraid it's either no growth for 10-15 years (that's the time it takes to plan, outsource, build, commission etc a power station) while Eskom build new power stations or continued but considerably slowed growth (1-2%) for 25-30 years while Eskom are constatntly trying to keep up.

Thats because the commies run the country, same reason we have telkom, why there must be 51%African ownership of undersea cables, and stuff like that, its a tsunami thing apparently according to the numero uno commie, not Eskoms fault, but the guvs.

What about building solar farms? Does that also take 10 to 15 years?

I think if Eishkom and gubberment pulled their fingers out of their noses and started doing something other than enriching themselves, it can be fixed a lot faster! And FFS, when new, better solar technology is developed in SA, why oh why did Eishkom and gubberment not keep it here? We have FAR more sunlight than Europe, and it would/could be used much easier and better here!

Even if solar panels were 100% efficient you would need to coat a substantial portion of the karoo in them to make a dent in SA's electrical shortfall.

The best short term solution would be solar water heaters in houses. But remember that domestic use constitutes only 35% of total demand in SA. Solar heaters will save approx 40% of household demand, so say a cut of 15% off total demand. Eskoms worst shortfall during Dec/Jan was 50%.

Don't forget that solar panels don't work on visable light but on IR. So sunlight ain't a neccesity for their operation. Heat is.

This is madness! I did wonder what they were going to do about future building plans, because every new development will require electricity, but this is just crazy.

You are going to have several things happening cos of this...

1) More squatters... using illegal connections (they need to make the penalty for illegal connections very severe).
2) Building contractors going out of business or moving out of the Joburg area.
3) People building anyway, but without electrical connections, using Gas and solar power.

Eskom cannot stop growth... unless they are going to start handing out condoms as well.. it is inevitable... people need houses. They should rather go full with the rationing system and reward houses who use less than a certain amount, and limit other houses to a set amount each month (yes, capping the electricity). All new developments should be required to use gas (or other alternatives) for cooking and heating and only a certain number of lights with energy saving bulbs.

This restriction is country wide.
Escom just killed the construction industry.
Hundreds of thousands unempolyed.
No construction company can afford to pay people for six months, whilst not working.
Escom certainly managed to put a stop to the building industry.
To run a normal household on solar power costs U.S $ 80 000.
Not economical.

I forsee a housing shortage looming.
Those that have your own houses, hang on to them.

You would never be able to sell power to Escom on a profitable basis.

Your cost of production is simply to high.

Solar farms will work. You need 90 x 180 watt (15 amp) solar panels to power a house.

At R 5 000 each it is expensive.

Do you have space in your back yard?

I think it is time the idiot running Eskom did the honourable thing and stepped down.

If this was Japan, it would be expected to kill yourself,by slitting your stomach.

He dishonoured his company.

Isn't it known as Harakiri? If that was practiced here we would have a bigger brain drain, not because these poeple are leaving the country but rather the gene pool.

Nope.
The majority of candidates that would need to kill themselves would only improve the gene pool by removing themselves from it.
Let us start a list.

1st place is a tie: Mantu, Ivy, Sonjica, Erwin, Mbeki, Zuma, Charlie - no guns- whathisname, ....

You are reading it wrong - no new projects will be allowed.

Then you are reading it wrong as well
All new construction projects countrywide that are bigger than a residential home will be blocked by Eskom for the next four to six months.
Housing projects will be allowed to continue. If not for that we will close our doors.
