Eskom stops new developments

Johannesburg - All new construction projects countrywide that are bigger than a residential home will be blocked by Eskom for the next four to six months.

New townhouse complexes, petrol stations, factories and all other construction projects where electricity provision needs to be obtained from Eskom in advance will be delayed by up to six months.
This is going to hit the economy hard...How are we going to progress if you're not allowed to?
Does this then mean if a structure is finished, there will be no elect for about 6 months? or am i reading this wrong.

You are reading it wrong - no new projects will be allowed.
Nothing is said about projects that do not want to have electricity from Eskom, though.

Obviously our guavamint feels Zimbabwe is pulling ahead too fast, so they are going to have to pull out all the stops to keep up.

It is what ESKOM and municipalities should have been doing all along though. It is called planning. No point building what you cannot service.
Certainly a setback, but a temporary one.
ESKOM have done a lot to avert more outages lately (translate that to they are actually doing their jobs now).

Nope - you have the cart in front of the horse.
What they should have been doing was developing more power stations.
What they did do was sell off our future to enrich themselves.

It is called planning anyway you look at it.
If you want to stand with a big stick and wag it at them have fun. What they are doing now will ultimately minimise the effects of the poor planning of the past.

If they don't do it we will end up with even more stick wavers and remember it was not ESKOM that was at fault, it was the GUV.
ESKOM can shoulder blame for poor plant management now sure, but that has improved dramatically over the last few months. (i.e. efficiencies)

Why 6 months? What is going to change between now and then? Did they just say 6 months because saying "indefinitely" would tank the economy pretty quickly?

But who is to say this little bit of correcting poor planning, will lead to these monkey's having a clue on HOW to plan in the future.

I am just worried that they'll fix this mess and we'll land in it again in 10 or 15 years due to poor planning ALL over again.

No, it is not.
Planning is the process of looking ahead and constructing a way forward that works.
What they are doing now is retroactive. They are patching the leak - it is not planning.

What is going to happen after 4-6 months? I do not see a new power plant magically arriving tomorrow. All this is doing is preventing a major problem in winter - after which they will start slowly allowing permits to be issued, which will see those new buildings only going operational after the elections - thereby buying themselves another 5 years in office.

Planning? Snort.

This is madness! I did wonder what they were going to do about future building plans, because every new development will require electricity, but this is just crazy.

You are going to have several things happening cos of this...

1) More squatters... using illegal connections (they need to make the penalty for illegal connections very severe).
2) Building contractors going out of business or moving out of the Joburg area.
3) People building anyway, but without electrical connections, using Gas and solar power.

Eskom cannot stop growth... unless they are going to start handing out condoms as well.. it is inevitable... people need houses. They should rather go full with the rationing system and reward houses who use less than a certain amount, and limit other houses to a set amount each month (yes, capping the electricity). All new developments should be required to use gas (or other alternatives) for cooking and heating and only a certain number of lights with energy saving bulbs.

Planning for our future, managing (crisis managing if you like) the mistakes of the past.

What could happen in six months? Dunno, maybe the worst of our winter would be behind us and the challenges with coal supplies to the plants would be overcome ;)

stick wavers :p

And for the next 6 months how many people will have no work?
And how many companies will close?

And how many jobs are going to be lost overall in the short to long term.

I will just hold onto this stick for as long as Charles whathisface allows me to, and wave it as much as needed. The guavamint is nothing more than a useless collection of non-thinkers who will maintain their jobs while thousands of others lose theirs through the ineptitude of the said officials.

whats the fuss!?!

There is no petrol to pump, the housing market is in the duldrums.. so there is no need to build more. Eskom are visionaries :D
