I also love it when people who know nothing about nuclear are happy when such plans gets shut down. Do any of the people promoting these 'green practices' know the efficiency at which power is generated by the wind and sun? Nuclear is the way to go until these technologies become viable, if at all.

Solar energy is by far the cleanest. But also has the highest initial cost per kilowatt. Wind isn't viable here in SA..... no, PE and the Cape doesn't qualify as suitable... not enough consistent wind. A nuclear station with a capacity of 4500 MW cost R150b two years ago. Now it's gone up to more than double that. A 3600 MW coal station costs in the region of R100b.

Here is a question ... I presume most on here to be of higher intelligence than most ... ;)

If Kouburg (sp?) is the only nucular power plant, then what is Pelendaba Nuclear Facility? If they are not making power (which I believe that are not - but when ever I have asked this question, I have been told that it does supply power) then what exactly are they making?

War heads? Only 40kays from Joburg  ... Nice!

its a research facility.

I love it when coal is burned and the earth is f#cked up some more. Nuclear ? no ways, that is far to clever for this 3rd world country we live in. It is time we do something about our beautiful natural environment - time for coal burning and more green house gases! Bulldoze Koeberg and put up a m03rs5 coal burner here, I am sick of seeing the mountains and green stuff. I want this place to look [-]as pretty[/-] like Transvaal.

And to think, I am giving almost half my salary to pay the people that make these decisions...

Namibia going nuclear lol

Namibia is essentially a desert country and it relies on South Africa for almost half its electricity.

However, it does have plenty of uranium and the government is already quietly getting on with a nuclear programme.

"We are going for nuclear power, there is no question about it, but what we are going to do - I am not prepared to talk about it because we haven't even got legislation in place yet," said Joseph Iiata, the permanent secretary in Namibia's ministry of minerals and energy.

"Why should we sleep in darkness if we have been given resources like uranium," he added.

And on PBMR

Now, the country is pioneering a new generation of much smaller nuclear reactors, which it hopes will solve not only its own power problems but also the rest of Africa's.

By 2030, the country intends to have built 40 new power stations, which will provide 30% of the country's electricity.

Gert Claassen is from PBMR, the company hoping to roll-out the so-called Pebble-Bed Modular Reactors in several years' time.

"The entire idea was to develop a reactor that is inherently safe, so that there would be no set of circumstances that one can devise that would ever cause a meltdown," he said.
Renewable energy is also a possible source of power (Credit: Penny Dale)

However, in 2005, South Africa's courts ordered PBMR back to the drawing board after anti-nuclear campaigners argued that its environmental impact assessment was flawed.

Many are also concerned by the new reactor's price tag, as it has cost $2bn so far.

"It's smaller but not safer," said energy specialist Leila Mohammed.

Eskom are NOT the people i would like dabbling in Nuclear energy.
You say that like you know what you're talking about...
They should even shut down Koeburg before the capre flats become a shiny piece of glass north of capetown... ;)

The Cape Flats are not north of Cape Town. And nothing that can happen at a nuclear power station will turn any piece of landscape into a "shiny piece of glass"...

With the fuel price coming down the way it did, burning coal is the cheapest way to make electricity. Never mind the air quality around Witbank, that's far far away (even further for you, sitting in the UK an' all).

Yes, and who needs clean healthy air anyways !

Why the heck is there always an uproar when something costs above a billion? Fighter jets, Patrol ships, Gautrains, Nuclear reactors, etc. All cost a lot because you get a lot.

South Africa has the money to spare since the government's biggest problem is their inability to spend fast enough! Great situation to have by the way.
