Eskom - The bottom line cost.

Sad but true.. Just on this morning's SAFM's after 8 debate this issue was debated. Someone called in to say she lives next to a squatter camp and no one there pays for power cos they all illegally inter-connected. And then some government mouthpiece came to refute the claim the poor are illegally connected.

She said the poor are all provided for by the government and don't need to pay for power. Basically what the portfolio committee is saying is that as long as Eskom can show that the poor are not affected by these increases then the government has no problem with them. Mind you government departments owe Eskom & municipalities in excess of R1bn in unpaid accounts:sick:

That depends on how much you're gonna pay. In terms of government's and SA workers' efficiency you will need to pay a lot - even though they're paid relatively poorly, its the same type of money paying into the NHI. The service delivery quality will be equal, payments will not, but payments won't be R10,000 per person - which is probably what is necessary to give 1st world medicine to everyone in SA, it follows that you will be paying less than that but your quality levels will drop since everyone - whether they pay or not - will get the same standard of care.

Totally agreed, guess I need to find a source of Euro/GBP income, cos otherwise I ain't gonna afford to subsidise the rest of the populace.

Pity, I really like home...:(
 
I have paid R9,600 for my utility bill for the last 2 months. That is almost a months salary. I don't know where to get more money from. If I ask my boss he is going to tell me to p*** off.
 
Ok so NHI, Electricity cost, er think food is going to have to take preference here even if it's braai by candlelight every night and grow your own veggies!

Harder economic times means more people are going to resort to pirating their entertainment (music/movies/games/TV). So next time SAFACT/BSA complains about piracy, blame Eskom.

I stand to be corrected, but a few things people tend to forget.

1. That increase is a average, i.e. if you're reading this chances are you are in an affluent area. Your increase % will be considerably higher.

2. This increase is their increase for the municipalities, they than decide what to charge you.

That's a lot. You must be consuming a lot of power or you own a very expensive house.
 
The ANC needs to share some of the blame for their short-sightedness. However, it was not the ANC that ignored the problem. As a service provider you need to account for expansion, using whatever sources are at your disposal. Eskom has been grossly negligent in this regard.

I am sure there are many global corporations that would jump at the chance to get a foothold in the lucrative South African economy, providing electricity and carrying the costs of expansion that Eskom expects the South African consumer to bear due to their gross mismanagement. Big corporations plan in the long term. Many of them do not expect a return on their investment for decades.

If I were the ANC government, I would start putting out tenders. In fact, I would have started last year when it became highly apparent that Eskom did not have the security of this nation's economy at heart. Without reliable, affordable electricity any economy is destined to crumble. This is Africa, nationalize the electricity provider and license the rights for the provision of this essential service to any one of the number of corporations that would happily jump on the gravy train!

Simply put...double standards. The poor can get a free ride through this mess, while the rest of is receive the shaft. Perhaps we can all steal electricity from Lolly Jackson :-D
 
Cold war solution

Perhaps there is the odd nuclear submarine we can purchase from the former commies and dock in CT/Durban/PE and run cable to the city. Reactors for those contraptions 100+ megawatts.

Bonus...will fall in line with current za navy policy. Subs in doc HO HO HO :-P

Personally I view the 2 as the same entity reporting to the same CEO. Public companies are answerable to their board of directors(Hopefully not good chums from school or what ever) and its shareholders. I would like to know the real truth behind all this short sited stupidity rather than explaining "Lining their pockets! Gravy train! and what not.

Basically high prices would encouage companies to get a slice of the pie but its at the expense of the consumer who will be suffering for the next 5+ years, baring in mind that eskom say they are still 30+ billion short with this 145% smooth anal intrusion.

There are pump storage systems that I believe are supposed to come online in 2012/2013. I think Eskom is building 2 and there is a private hydro station in the free state that is either running or in the process of completing. But I don't know if they sell direct to business as Eskom is still pathetically finalizing feed in tarrif fees.

They have run their business poorly I dont see why they will treat small share holders any better.

On a side note: senior management do have shares in Eskom IIRC. How do us peons/bill footers get access to that?
