Quite often they left it until things were about to or even did collapse. Being able to feed power back into the grid for instance took a long time to come about.

Don't mistake this for excusing the failures of the government. I am merely pointing out that the failure is not unique.

If Eskom is willing to buy me an Energy efficient Intel Atom PC or Netbook,
I'll stop using my power-hungry monster for posting on the forums and
24/7 downloading. :)

Just upgrade the grid to allow people to get money back when they generate electricity. I'm sure many businesses with the capital would invest in solar panels since it'll reduce running costs. Subsidize solar and other renewable sources if you're not interested in building a nuclear power plant any time soon!

They do, not by much but you can get rebates in installing hot water generating systems like Solar or Heat-pump systems, but IMHO they should extend it to other additional electricity saving items like gas stoves and electricity generation devices.

I saw a 25% price hike, R 27 billion in profits and ridiculous bonuses awarded to eskom directors.
I discovered that as a so-called municipality client I also pay much more for electricity than the so-called eskom clients residing at the other side of town, thus subsidizing them.
I discovered that as a private individual I am paying much much more per KW than some of the big industries that are using billions of units per month, thus subsidizing them.

My message to eskom: Choose someone else to pick on. I pay for it and will use whatever I need!:mad:

That is R1 667 per month over 48 months, not so bad actually - not sure how long the setup would last. Surely it would be a nice tax write off for a business - wonder if you could get the VAT back? How well would that setup work in a Cape winter?

IIRC the licensing framework is already in place for the Independent Power Providers (IPP). The problem right now is that none of them can generate power more cheaply than Eskom so they have no legitimate business model.

You're subsidising your municipality, not those who buy direct from Eskom. It's one of the places municipalities make their money - huge mark-ups on electricity.

Surely we could build nuclear if environmentalists would stop moaning and preventing progress. Protecting the environment is all very well, but it has to be reasonable.
 
Eskom you piece of **** corrupt greedy ****ers, kiss my a$$.
Stop taking billions in bonuses and selling our electricity to our neighbours as well as giving huge discounts to big business and then maybe we can talk.
Eskom, Vodacom, all the bloody same. Greed greed greed !!

1) Get rid of all the blatant electrickery-stealing that goes on. Drive past Killarney racetrack and Dunoon. Its like a beehive of cables crossing the road overhead.
Until I see Eskom is serious about doing something from their side, i only see this as a propaganda cover-up for their ineficiencies.
2) Incentivise cuts by dropping prices on the first amount used, then increasing prices as usage increases. When you hit the pockets, something will change.
3) Police electricity wasters. In gardens I see signs "Borehole water". Lights burning needlessly at night should have a sign saying they are solar-powered.
4) Get rid of the deadwood at eishkom. This goes without saying.
5) PLAN AHEAD. Electric cars are coming. The population is breeding like fruit-flies. More appliances use electrickery.
6) Let solar-power producers pump electricity into the grid. Even an insigvicant amount will send the message that you are serious.

We should start a forumn of street lights burning during day time. I still see that constantly, obviously the municipality don't care if the money it's wasting is not it's own.

The street lights are left on in areas where copper cable theft is rife. It is more difficult to steal a live power cable.
Replacing the cable, including the labour necessary, is more expensive than the electricity consumed. Add to that the decreased security at night if the lights are off.

Now I have 2 X 200L solar geysers.
A solar voltaic system 4KW produces approx 25 - 30 KW/h a day

My bill for electricity reduced from R2300 to (R300 -R350) per month

The grid tied system costs R42 000 with installation budget approx R47 000

Over how long do you repay the R100k? looks like 10% interest over 20 years.

Anywhoo, this is ultimately the right way to go, financing these things are still the bugger though.
