Eskom warns over SWC power supply

Johannesburg - South Africa's electricity company expects to be under pressure during the FIFA World Cup.

State-owned Eskom says it will regularly update South Africans on supply during the tournament, which starts June 11, and ask them to turn off some appliances if power runs low.

Under the worst circumstances, South Africans will be asked to turn off everything but one TV - so they can continue to get updates - and one light.

The utility says "although electricity supply is expected to be sufficient over this period, cold winter temperatures combined with high electricity demand is likely to place Eskom under additional pressure".

Yet another reason to have another power company. What about wind power, how feasable is it. I saw on "Worlds Greatest Fixes" on Nat.Geo channel that one wind turbine (all be it a really big one) can provide power for over 15000 households. Why not offer a tender for a reunable resource power company

Because only a small portion of SA's electricity needs are from households. Factories and such are far worse culprits when it comes to using electricity and the only solution for them is to build more power sources.

Wind, unfortunately, isn't available country wide and is relatively very expensive. Solar's another option, but with the lack of proper metering in the household, there is no motivation to actually slap a couple of panels on your roof - something I'd happily do if I weren't going to get billed for any electricity being produced by it.
 
I'm just glad I bought a UPS... at least when the power goes out I'll still be able to surf News24 and read that the World Cup final has been delayed because of load shedding...
 
I pay for my electricity and like everybody else will be shafted on an annual basis until 2012 with the price increases.

Eskom must not make this my problem.

I will use electricity as I please.
 
Maybe Eskom should ask it's biggest users to cut back, seeing that they get it almost for nothing anyway.

These include the 5th biggest single user, Motraco in Mozambique, and they are pay 12c per kW/h!!!!!

Then we have BHP Billiton, Anglo American and Xstrata who also have sweet deals...

And then, of course, the biggest waster of all, the SA governmental departments!!

Those damn usage stats and warnings come up on TV, I run around the house switching on everything!

Don't charge me a premium which rapes me of my drinking money over the next three years and then still tell me how to use my overpriced krag.

Cut off the fckin aluminium smelters during SWC. If there still isn't enough juice then we'll talk about 1 TV + 1 Light.
 
I don't give a rats ass about the World Cup.
I'll use the electricity I need and I'll pay for it but don't expect me to change my lifestyle because of someone else's incompetence and negligence.

If there are wide spread blackouts I don't care what overseas visitors think.
Why must we hide the ANC's incompetence?
