Eskom will implement continuous Stage 6 load-shedding this weekend

It has gone from load shedding, to dark most of the time with spot of power here and there.

You sure, have someone that says he stays there, and say they have not had load shedding the past month even showed me on ESP? That is why I was asking.

Likely living in an exclusion zone. Surely a high ranking politician nearby or near to some critical infrastructure.

Wow lots of moaning from the Cape Townians, it's like you guys really haven't had stage 6 before or even forgot.

We like to be different from the rest of the country :p

But more seriously, while the cost of living (relative to average salary) is higher in CT, people are prepared to pay those rates etc. on the assumption of reduced LS and better city council services.

CoCT has clearly made a 'business decision' not to use Steenbras on the weekend*, which is quite irritating to households, however. Then CoCT basically lies and says they keep doing maintenance every weekend - before September last year, we used to get LS reduction on Saturday if memory serves.

*Although CT is a tourist city, it's kind of weird they are basically telling restaurants, theatres, etc. that they are on their own now on weekends, despite the vibrant nightlife in CT.

Perhaps there are other issues with the dam?

There is not enough power supply to pump up during stage 6. Too bad CoCT does not use their 1st world rates and taxes income to secure the electricity supply for the pump. They could have built some wind and solar to power it. Unfortunately the DA does not build for sustainability, it only builds free houses and fixes potholes.

Perhaps there are other issues with the dam?

The original Steenbras pumped storage scheme used a lower reservoir with a fixed capacity, equivalent to about 12 hours of a single stage load shedding for CoCT. This was designed only for 'peak power', and limited the duration of operation that could be provided to between 4 and 8 hours (depending on half or full rating), before water must be pumped back up.

An augmented scheme now feeds water from the pump station into the treatment plant for the CoCT drinking water supply. In theory this can run forever (like a hydroelectric dam), but at a lower power rating. This is ultimately limited by the capacity of the Steenbras Upper dam (currently 100% full), which can supply a few weeks water, and the inflow capacity of the municipal infrastructure. It is simply not possible to run Steenbras 24/7/365, regardless of maintenance issues.

I wish they would just make up there mind. How is one supposed to plan if they tell me stage 6 and then it becomes stage 2 out of nowhere?

Please if they can announce these things with 24 hours warning. Thanks.
