Eskom workers fired by SMS

Indeed. They should not be receiving SMSs. What they should be getting is a criminal record for intentional & malicious damage to state property.

Knowing how these things go they're more likely to get a raise though.

I thought Medupi is a national key point...so mutiny charges more like it.

According to the union, the text messages read: “Dear employee with effect from 27 March 2015, you are not required to report for duty. The company will proceed and implement disciplinary processes forthwith and you will be notified accordingly.”

Damn those evil bastids! They could at least have told them to "have a nice day"!

You know.... It would be really cool if members of the public could pay to send sms's to these chops.

"Hey you bastard, thanks for wasting millions and not even getting the job done"

"I hope you enjoy unemployment as much as I enjoy load shedding"

Not entirely similar... But I once was dumped by a girl via SMS in varsity - uncool!! But I guess these guys deserve it!

cry me a fooking river, criminals deserve less than an sms. Last I heard the Medupi conditions were far above normal conditions, but they state that as a reason for strike? Good for nothings.

But it doesn't irritate me nearly as much as these townships with the pirate connections for electricity, and then they want to stab the guy tasked to cut the connections. Who the fook do they think they are? Electricity is not a charity service for uneducated fools

So they were not really fired by sms. Merely suspended and informed of disciplinary hearings. No funny business then.

It's unfortunate that some people don't realise how FORTUNATE they are to still have a job in the current STATE OF THE NATION. Put that in your address for next year, President Jacob Zuma! ;)

Pretty sure they would clean up at a mass action lawsuit at the CCMA if they were really dismissed via SMS. Any HR people know if that is really an accepted termination agreement?
