Eskom workers fired by SMS

How many workers are there working on Medupi again? 20 000? And its not been finished yet?

And how do the objectors propose is the easy way to notify 1000 workers? Call them to a stadium and then die as they tear you apart limb by limb?

Pretty sure they would clean up at a mass action lawsuit at the CCMA if they were really dismissed via SMS. Any HR people know if that is really an accepted termination agreement?
It likely won't constitute a firing in any case. Sounds more like "don't bother showing up for work next week (not that you would anyway)".

As for the HR part...probably not. But not for the reason you think (SMS). From what I see generally you'd expect to either see a signed resignation letter or a significant stack of paperwork to back it if it's unilateral from the companies side. Here the issue is more likely to be the lacking stack than the SMS. I've seen people get fired without any notification at all (they just disappear without valid contact methods)

Fun fact...many companies will start preparing those stacks of paper work on anyone they consider even mildly borderline. So while its very difficult to fire someone in SA, a lot of companies are so prepared that they've got enough to fire a sizable chunk of people (including ones where there is no intention to fire them).

Couldn't be bothered any more about the health or well being of strikers - they vote for a bad leadership then strike and we all pay.

They should be fired by squad for all I care.

It's unfortunate that some people don't realise how FORTUNATE they are to still have a job in the current STATE OF THE NATION. Put that in your address for next year, President Jacob Zuma! ;)

This!
time people start taking responsibility for their actions, and be thankful for what they have.
if you don't do your job, and even worse still, go and damage company property, you should know already you are out, be it sms, or notice board or by loudspeaker. doing that means you don't deserve the job.
thousands of other people willing to work.

Remember Medupi staff are employed by contractors who in turn have contracts with Eskom. So it not eskom sending sms but the contract company...
