Eskom workers go on strike

South Africa’s biggest labor federation will embark on a nationwide protest on Wednesday that will keep teachers, policemen, miners and workers at embattled power utility Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd. away from their posts amid a fourth day of rolling blackouts.

The National Union of Mineworkers -- an affiliate of the Congress of South African Trade Unions that represents workers from the mining, energy and construction industries -- is expecting more than 100,000 people to take part in the strikes, said NUM spokesman Luphert Chilwane. [Bloomberg]

Simple response to this really.... If the reason for the strike is because of the possibility of splitting Eskom into 3 entities, arrest the Union leaders and charge them with treason...

Of course that would NEVER happen, especially not so close to elections.

What does Section 77 (1) of the Labour Relations Act say about this?

77. Protest action to promote or defend socio-economic interests of workers
(1) Every employee who is not engaged in an essential service or a maintenance service has the right to take part in protest action.

Unions are a pox on this nation

Good point actually, NUM just gave Eskom what they need to trim staff numbers to more acceptable levels.
Yup, even with those numbers culled they are still ridiculously overstaffed but it would help a lot with the we are bleeding money.
Salaries are a companies big expense and when you have something like 40k and you still cannot keep anything running, there might be a problem?

These unions need to **** right off.

Yes they are important to stand up for worker rights but we need a Maggie to cut them down to size asap.
Yup cause unions did the UK well, they went from being a manufacturing powerhouse to not.

How is it treason.

Agreed - unfortunately she uploaded to the cloud a while ago and we don't have anyone local with the balls to do what needs to be done.
(I met her when she came for a visit to SA in 1996 - she was sharp and seriously tough!)

You're confusing "reasonable" with "Africa". They'll probably hire another 10k just to appease the unions and carry on with the bad service. As long as the cats are getting Range Rovers at the top...

Are they on strike at the moment? Nothing has change regarding load shedding so they don't seem important, fire the lot of them.
