The biggest problems with unions is that the law separates their demands from reality by preventing employers from firing striking workers.

Completely disagree, the right to strike is vital to hold companies responsible for employee welfare.

What absolutely has to change is sector crossing strikes, the notion that a trade union can call a strike for miners and take the construction industry as well is absurd. Never mind sector crossing, sector wide should also be banned and restricted to company wide strikes, but this would require actual work from the trade unions to deal with individual companies...

And while I'm pie in the sky here sector wide increase negotiation must !@#$ right off.

They have a right to strike under what I said. That right is simply limited by economics.
Given the costs of training, trust etc, there is a high economic cost to firing a large group of employees. That is weighted by their skill and what the unemployment rate is.

Contract law already provides everything that a union would need to protect their worker's welfare. That falls well within workers rights. What workers don't have a right to, is someone else's money.
Eskom workers know the government cannot fire them, thus they have no reason not to force the government to pay them exorbitant salaries.

South Africa has a chronically high unemployment rate. Protecting the jobs of these people prevents other people, who might be willing to work harder and for less from gaining access to those jobs.

Agree they have a right to strike and complain, but they are not offering any solutions.

What solutions are unions providing to reduce unemployment?

In Eskom's case what are Unions doing to fix the load shedding and spiraling costs?

Let them reapply for their jobs.
Do a skills audit and only hire those with the relevant skill set.

When will Rama grow balls and fire 10 000 workers who so incompetent. A SOE that's own by government and they cannot get rid of these useless idiots who don't know what they doing as long as they have flashy cars and houses
 
1.) Leave them on strike.
2.) Use the army to protect infrastructure and prevent intimidation of non-striking workers.
3.) Salary savings.
 
These are probably the workers that know they shouldnt be employed and have nothing better to do. Let them all go, and if they can prove they should actually be there, let them go back.

South Africa should crush the unions like Margaret Thatcher did. Bring in workers from China while the union members are striking, and refuse for them to go back to work. We will soon see how many people would be interested to strike then.

In many ways she simply got lucky that the unions played into her hands by not following their own rules. They could have made it very hard for her.

Collective bargaining is absolutely essential and companies have to be prevented from retaliating against workers for negotiating en masse. That doesn't mean unions can't become self-destructive just as companies are wont to run amok when workers are not adequately protected from the essential psychopathy of business. Both sides play a role in creating the adversarial relationship.

Not unions per se, but the reality of labour costs in the UK. The unions wanted industry that was no longer financially viable to continue regardless. The alternative is inadequate pay topped up with social support. It was also a very expensive exercise for the UK. Unemployment shot up and the state had to carry that through welfare (which expanded under Thatcher).
