Eskom's confounding average electricity consumption

The actual average electricity consumed by South African households is far lower than Eskom's claimed figure of 30kWh per day, data from multiple reputable sources shows.

This raises big questions over the power utility's assertion that its proposals for "cost-reflective" electricity tariff reform in South Africa will see average households paying roughly the same or just slightly more for power.

A fcking corrupt idea to steal more money from people who pay for electricity.

It is? As an average for SA perhaps. I’m sure plenty here are close to that.
Perhaps if you include the non-paying ones which won't be affected anyway but certainly not paying customers.

30kWh is an incredible amount of electricity.

Closest I can get to that is when the domestic is here running laundry etc. and the vacuum most of the day. All lights on until she leaves.
I also have to use the electric oven to bake tjoppies and potatoes on that same day. No solar geyser yet.

I've never seen 30kWh.
That average is bulls**t.

Would love to see some data from someone who moved over to a solar geyser in Gauteng.
That's going to be my next upgrade hopefully.

Currently getting about 40% my total energy just from 4 x 550Watt panels, depending on the season of course.
The hope is that a solar geyser, three more panels and another 5kWh battery should basically get me off grid.

So the truth is then that Eskom can't even figure out what people use and relies on information for uninterested third parties which is about right for the ANC, never forget who they are and where they came from, neither is good in any way imaginable.

Don't forget that mathematics and fangled numbers are not their strong point either. It's colonialist stuff and they want it gone.

This piqued my interest.
Was waiting on December to run a full year's data but let's do a quick check.

1 Fridge, Electric Stove, Big TV, 3 computers, 5 monitors, 2 aircons (fan only mode mostly)... etc.

Had solar since 2015. From October through April we use between 2 and 3Kw a day

Having seen a lot of different houses I think that average could be about right.

Key is just how many people have a pool pump running 12 hours, bore hole irrigation for an hour, aircon or heating most of the day and 3 geysers they never use, and underfloor heating which comes on when they are asleep!

So they use 50-80kWh per day, whereas many/most people use 10-20kWh but it drags the average up!

Also Eskom doesn't serve many built up areas so do they consider a farm or block of flats or an estate as One HOME? Maybe... Wouldn't put it past them.

The luxuries you mention make up a puny fraction of the "households" in this country.
So no, that 30kWh number sounds like utter BS... and since they don't want to release the numbers or their calculations we can all assume by default that it's BS.
