Eskom's confounding average electricity consumption

yeah I used to only run the pool pump every second day or so back before solar, still had no issues with it, whereas now I run it whenever we have bright and sunny days so it's more often.
Dishwasher is also run in the morning, and some other high draw items throughout the day. Though part of me still hasn't gotten over keeping the batteries so I tend to go into hibernation mode at night.

Skimmer works so much better when you can run for extended periods for one thing. Before, at this time of year the weir catcher would be clogged with jacaranda flowers and more that sank to the bottom and got kreepied.

Yup there are definitely some advantages to running it for 6 to 7 hours a day :-)
 
How much more gas was used with extra 2 people? To keep this argument simple, we should convert gas usage into leccy kWh.
For heating, nothing/probably slight decrease (can't really check as building/apartment living space), would go down as humans produce around 100Wh. I also heat each room regardless as I have a ~27kWm/m^2/yr building energy rating. Issue is more that needed to air out more often.

Shower was around 1-2KWh/day, for gas that's around R1-2 equivalent, if was living at house where it's one system I'd probably have come near even after taking heating into account as living room/kitchen/bathroom would still be heated, just added of an extra bedroom but that's to 16C, so 12->16C with a 45kWm rating, that's not that much energy.

I also don't have standing loss for water in apartment as gas is tankless, and the house one is like 5l with a lot of insulation that's on regardless of time of year so doesn't make much difference.

Really looking forward to going heat pump in the house though, hoping to do it next year, right now just every installer is fully booked, going to go down from ~120 EUR/oil per month to like 30 EUR in energy even with 17c/kWh, efficiency difference is insane.

If you don't pay for electricity, you could easily use more than 30 units of electricity per day as you will be running the AC in summer full blast and all your heaters the same way in winter.
 
So the truth is then that Eskom can't even figure out what people use and relies on information for uninterested third parties which is about right for the ANC, never forget who they are and where they came from, neither is good in any way imaginable.
You should also not take Daily Idiot's articles too seriously. They will publish any kak.

A geyser uses like 6kw regardless? But do you really think everyone baths/showers every day? I can tell you even in informal settlements where they don't pay it's way less due to lack of water. 30kw is probably nearer the upper average but that's not what an overall average is and judging by how many people on the upper end of wealthy struggle to get there maybe even that is bs.

Considering this is about electricity prices only paying customers should be considered. Then seeing how it is about how most customers would be affected the very upper end should be excluded and a weighted average used for the rest.

Old geysers standing loss is around 3kWh/24h at max temp (depends on liters ofc), at 55-60C it's usually <2kWh.
Newer 2020 standard was supposed to ~halve that unsure if it got introduced.

But do agree with your argument of lack of water, earlier quoted a stat of <1/3 households having hot water.

I think most people nowadays would have the geyser switch on just before use and not have it switched on permanently. Even people I know that don't have a geyserwise would do it manually. But even if we take those figures in account it's still not near the 30kw. Even if I really try I struggle to get to 30kw.

I have a solar geyser, oven/stove (don't use it much though), fridge, kettle, microwave, nas, 3 tvs. Apple TV, Playstation, 2 laptops, modem and irrigation system. That is probably my largest power users.

I use 3.5kWh a day normally and 5kWh if one person is working from home. 2 Person household.

2 person household plays a a role

Small kids don't impact load to badly , big ones do

So you kinda grow into heavy consumption

The same with cooking
For some it evolves

ie when your wife surpasses your mom/grandma

She makes an awesome sourdough bread lots of oven preheat for dutch oven and 40 min bake time

Geyser switch doesn't make sense unless you're talking days, or trying to make it so it only switches on during solar.

Switching it on once a day is basically the same as just leaving it on as you're still trying to heat it above 55C / making up for the standing loss.

Sure, if it's you're going for a trip for a week, makes sense, and then heat it back up before use when you get back, but in general, no.
