Eskom's confounding average electricity consumption

So, about 50kWh per month.
It is just 2 old people
And no idea what their cooking habits is

They do have a electric oven and other devices they sometimes use instead

Their daily avg is about 15kwh

So many factors

Just our friday pizza and saturday sourdough bread consumes approx 7.5kwh probably so contributes 1kwh to the daily avg

I mean add 50kWh on top of their monthly leccy bill for a fair assessment of energy consumption:

How many kg's per month?
Three and then it lasts over a month. Although I have picked up that Mercury Build-it usually overfills it and once it was 3.5kg.

And I cook for 3 times and freeze it so it's only rice and stuff that's a single meal.

yes you can save according to a quick google 1.3kwh a day so yea if you have extremely low usage this 1.3kwh loss can represent a higher percentage

so yea with maybe 2 bath sessions a day it would work out to a bit more than 10% loss of consumed

those that save that much probably are compromising on temp, sure you don't notice it since we mix with cold
ie the mix just has less cold water , the problem is though the lower tank temps opens you up to bacteria that is normally killed with a tank that is hot enough

by being a bit more aware keeping adco loperamides in the house simply isn't needed anymore
except if you get invited over to the old ( i'm old so should say older) peoples home for a meal

ie like xmas time or braai i dread it cause we always come of with an effect on the stomach
while you can go without any bouts like that inbetween
I think this is over-exaggerated. A heating once a day to 70 should suffice. Modern temps on geysers are apparently too low to prevent Legionnaires.

How would that make it a fair assessment? It's electricity usage and not energy usage and the current estimate of 30kw/h would drastically push up the bill for most people. I also don't think a stove would have cost us less than 100kw/h a month, maybe even 200.

If your temp is too low you would hit that chance regardless. If it's correct I don't think it matters whether you heat it once a day or keep it warm. If you only use it once a day you're going to want to set it a bit higher in any case to give enough hot water.
 
You said 3kw/h per day. If you only heat it when you want to use it it's only the heat up time. It then stays cold in any case till the next time so the loss is not a factor.

You're definitely using up more power by heating up once a day to 70C than just keeping it at 55-60C as your heat leakage will increase due to difference to ambient. Any switch on/off power saving generally has more to do with how long the water sits at ambient.

And if you heat it once a day, you're just increasing standing loss by having it at a higher temperature. Just keep it on at a lower temp, you'll see way more power saving at heating to 55-60C once or twice a day than going to 70C.

I'm just saying there is a lot of energy in gas. When people say they hardly use any electricity but in fact are using **** loads of gas doesn't really paint the true picture of their energy needs. Anyway, gas is more expensive than electricity, so you're not saving anything by the way.

I think it is less than what I would normally make for myself, but then again I was never really hungry after eating a meal. I have eaten two servings before, but that was not in circumstances that wasn't part of my normal routine.

They are basically a company that meal preps for you. I just did a the calculation and it seemed fair to me if you consider the ingredient prices, the electricity prices and the effort/time.

Sure but we aren't discussing energy needs but electricity needs and if you can replace it I don't see why not. If we were we would also have to factor in things like the fuel you use. And I don't think gas is more expensive if I go with my own use and what I would use on a stove. For some things perhaps not for cooking.

Yes we are. People use gas because the power was always out.

Heat up 1 litre of water in the pot on your gas stove and 1 litre in an electric kettle, which one starts boiling first?

Rather get an induction stove if you really want to save costs as all that heat you feel on your gas stove is wasted energy.

It's flawed reasoning as exactly the reason people turned to gas is because they want to save electricity so you can't include that back to come to an average consumption to charge people by.

And I just checked. I use less than R100 of gas a month. At the current rate of R3.68 that would give me 27 units. I doubt I could cook anywhere even near a month on a stove with that. Maybe the induction and airfryer people can help out here but I also don't think I can do it with that. That is a flawed comparison as gas is variable and you don't cook food in a kettle.

Induction is like cooking your food in a kettle. You could probably get buy with 15 units if you changed cooking to induction stove.

Not sure what you're talking about, for a geyser you're heating up all the water in the tank to the temperature, that water will have a standing loss.

If you're talking about tankless, sure, I even have that, said so in the chat, but that's not going to 70C, that's still set to 45-50C (70C is very hot, you'd burn yourself without mixing in cold water), but a timer for on/off doesn't apply to this.
