Esquire and caching SSD's

Do / or can Esquire get hold of any SSD caching drives? As i requested a quote for a SSD cache drive however i only received a quote for a standard SSD as that was all they had in stock. Surely they should be able to get SSD cache drives from their suppliers as they quoted me on the OCZ vertex 90GB SSD, and i know OCZ make cache drives.

Any feedback would be appreciated Esquire.

I thought the idea was that you buy, say a 60GB SSD and configure it to be a cache drive.

I haven't investigated this.
 
Excuse my ignorance but what makes a cache SSD different from a normal SSD? (except maybe smaller size)
 
I knew about that but as far as I knew, you can use any SSD?

EDIT: Ah I see, essentially it is a high-performance, low capacity drive that support more than usual writes (for SSD).

Question is if it is really justifies the cost. I would just use a standard SSD...
 
@ all who dont understand the concept of using only a standard SSD, you have to have a z68 motherboard to use a standard SSD. the SSD cache drives come with software which it runs off so that you can use these cache drives with any motherboard.

Hope this explains the reason behind not using any SSD.

The SSD caching drives you referring to, are the OCZ Synapse Series , we currently only bringing in the High end and Main stream products as we have not had much calls Synapse Series as yet.

But I can look at bringing in some next week when we place new orders.

I am a bit lost here in all honesty, why can a z68 mobo use a standard but other mobo's cannot use a normal ssd. Seems a bit odd.

I am reading it as a ssd won't work on any motherboard but a z68 which is confusing me slightly :D.
 
The Intel Z68 chipset (and new Z77) supports SSD caching natively, H61, P67 and X79 does't support it.
 
Actually, the z68 and z77 is needed for the intel caching software to work. It actually has nothing to do with the hardware, except that intel wants to keep it exclusive, so they locked it to the z68/77. (it should work on any hardware if you can bypass the software checks...) Well, that's how I understand it.

Yes, that is correct. Intel have locked their software to specific motherboards only, hence you have to have that specific motherboard to be able to use any SSD, however the manufactures of SSD have designed certain SSD's that have their own built in software which can then be used on any motherboard, hence why you need a SSD caching drive to be able to beef up the system instead of having to get a new mobo to suite intel's software
 
What are the advantages of caching?

say you load all games on 1tb with ssd caching , the software remembers what files you use the most and that files you use the most will be used at ssd speeds, but you still have access to the other files as normal drive speeds.

Ahhh so if i have my games and program on a ssd caching will be useless for me? Everything i use is on my ssd's.

The Dataplex software isn't built in. It is separate and you're given a license key to download and use it, which is linked to a hardware id for the vendor. From what I understand, the software has a single activation that requires internet access for validation (not sure how often) and has one of those 'if you change your hardware too much you'll lose your activation and have to schlep to get it sorted out' things.

Theoretically, you could buy just this software itself and use any SSD, but it isn't currently being offered as stand-alone afaik.

Just seems a lot simpler and more effective to buy a 120GB drive, especially since Dataplex only caches your system drive anyway.

@ Rudimental.... Correct, you have to download the software, and yes....if you change hardware to many times it deactivates, however if you deregister your key, then install the hardware and re register the key this will rectify your issue (from what I have read on other forums with regards to this issue)
