None are more reliable than the next.

It's down to luck.

WD tend to have better after-sales service.
 
warranty or not, Nobody can warrant my data on the drives. I'm running Samsung and they are better than seagate

+1. Im sitting with a dead seagate drive right next to me. Can't say the same for my sammy drives ;)

Phone any distributor and ask them which brand is more reliable.

I'll give you a hint as to what their answer will be: It's in this thread. ;)

Your experience says nothing about reliability. Unless your household(s) has had anti-Seagate waves and anti-Seagate fairy dust sprinklings about... :D

One person has had Seagates fail and no Samsungs or WDs fail. The next has has WDs and Samsungs fail, but not Seagate, etc., etc.
 
I wouldn't really try and force them to stick by that price as they are not obligated to sell to you in the first place, but they have gone out of their way to assist the mybroadband community so I think we owe them that much!

I don't have to phone anybody PP. Saying that my experience says nothing about reliability is daft and you know that. In MY experience I have had seagates fail (2 in total) but my samsung and WD drives have not. To ME thats says something about seagate reliability. The "greater" picture may be different but this has been my experience ;)

I respectfully disagree, and maintain that your experience says nothing about reliability. Reliability is down to luck; no drive manufacturer is less reliable than the next. This is widely agreed on.

And your answer inferred "general reliability", perhaps specify "personal opinion of reliability" next time. :)

Did you fail to notice any of the capitalized ME's in my post....? We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. In my experience they haven't been reliable and you are trying to tell me I can't deduce that from my experiences with the drives...? :wtf:

Yes. Unless you buy thousands every month and have been for the last 36months your experiences are meaningless.
 
I'm not sure where this myth that all hard drives are equal came from, but it is nothing more than that, a myth. The truth is that annualised failure rates are different between manufacturers and between specific models, but none of the long-term studies done on hard disk failure rates have been able to release solid numbers, because, and I quote the Google study from a few years ago:

Failure rates are known to be highly correlated with drive models, manufacturers and vintages [18]. Our results do not contradict this fact. For example, Figure 2 (Annualized failure rates broken down by age groups) changes significantly when we normalize failure rates per each drive model. Most age-related results are impacted by drive vintages. However, in this paper, we do not show a breakdown of drives per manufacturer, model, or vintage due to the proprietary nature of these data.

The real thing to note is that rather than manufacturers, you need to look at specific models to determine reliability, especially for long term reliability (3+ years).

edit: Yes, you read correctly, drive failure rates are proprietary. Don't ask me why.
