Ethernet extender

Hi

I need to run a 200m ethernet cable. I'm looking for a range extender as wireless is not an option. Any ideas where I can get one? (I can't use a normal switch as there is no power in between as well)

Well even an extender would require power in some form. May I suggest that you look into swtiches with power over ethernet capability and then just put a switch inbetween that draws power from the ethernet cable.

That is probably the best way yes but I don’t know if one split in the middle would be sufficient though. Some LAN's I’ve seen runs up to 100M without problems while others begin with their problems at just over 80M...

I suppose its worth a try with one, if that doesn't work you'll have to have 2 switches with PoE running from both sides, one to each switch?
 
amanjee, What do you want to do over this 200M cable? Because I suppose at 200M it will still connect, but just not at 100mbps.
 
200m of fiber might not be a bad investment depending on the environment if its 200m outside in JHB fibre is the way to go. 2 pair fiber is R7 or R8 a meter and media converters about R900 each. getting the splicing done might cost more than a media converter though. If its indoors or underground then go copper with a switch in the middle somewhere.
 
Can you tell us a bit more about the scenario environment this is for?
 
12V Lead acid battery (like UPS battery) to drive a LAN switch (12V) inbetween?
Dunno how much power a switch uses, but guessing u'd need 2 replace fresh charged battery daily?
Is it indoors or outside? Guess another worry is rain/bad weather/lighting?
I needed network over about 230m, from office to outside greenhouse (farm), but luckily 2 wireless APs with extra oversize antennas worked (in WDS), otherwise would have attempted the 12V battery option (likely with solar cells to power keep battery charged).
A bit worried about bad weather and LAN cable outside where we are, stuff gets fried too many times :-(

Say hello to the Veracity Outreach PoE Extender
The OUTREACH doubles, triples or even quadruples the normal 100m limit of CAT5 cable run length for 100BaseT networks. It forwards both Ethernet and PoE for another 100m using a power-processing scheme, and multiple units can be employed in series for even longer distances, with no degradation in network speed or latency. OUTREACH itself is powered by a 48v PoE input (such as a PoE injector) and so requires no separate power connection in the middle of the cable. Because the units are able to connect in series, with no extra power inputs, you can run up to 700 meters of CAT 5 cable to any networking based device. The OUTREACH is also auto sensing, meaning if you plug a PoE cable from an OUTREACH unit, into a non PoE device, it will regocnise this, and stop sending power over the cable!
That takes care of being able to get power out to 100m. Maybe use that to power a *small* PoE switch at the mid-point so you can then run another 100m and not fall foul of the ~100m (ish, I know it's a bit longer but I don't care enough to look now) max. distance you're allowed to go between devices.
 
If it's outdoors, fibre will be cheaper. According to my back of an envelope calcs, Cat 5 is cheaper up to 100m, past that, fibre is cheaper.

100m of fibre:

2 media converters R 1 800
100m heavy duty duct fibre R 700
Terminations R 300 - assuming you can pull a terminated fibre through your duct, otherwise you'll need to pay a call out fee.

Total R 2 800 + R 7 per metre of fibre extra

Cat 5:

100m Belden 7997A R 2 000
Terminations R 10
Lightning protection R 700

Total: R 2 710 + R 27 per metre of Cat 5 extra (incl extenders)

Sure, you could go for cheaper PE sheathed cable, Scoop has some for R 5.50/m (I've never used it), but standard PVC sheathed Cat 5 wont last a month. Cat 5 is cheap and easy for low speeds and short runs, fibre is bullet proof for long runs and high speeds, i.e. they have different applications - choose wisely.
