Ethernet next to power cable

It's not good practice to have them close together, but for general home use I've not had any problems. It shouldn't be done though, I know. But I'm lazy.
 
I doubt it would be an issue at all since the Ethernet specification (IEEE 802.3) has a minimum of 2.1kV of isolation for each Ethernet port. (Ethernet is far more resilient than something like RS-232.)
nothing to do with the isolation its when the mains cable gets compromised and turns the data cable live ,thats the problem .sans 5.1.1 states no wires that fall outside of the code may be run with any part of an electrical installation.just out of interest did you run cabtyre/surfex/norse through the conduit or loose conductors .

Ethernet pins are isolated, there is no direct connection to the circuit board. In other words, if 230v live 'gets in there' then it should not destroy networking equipment. Sure, I hear what you're saying about codes, etc. No, just loose wires in the conduit. Actually not so loose, a tight fit, really. The AC wiring is heavy duty, only semi-flexible, with a very hard exterior and the conduit is either 20mm or 25mm, I forget which. The AC wiring is the type made to be buried, I forget what the 'technical term' for it is. Some people even just bury it without any conduit because in their minds it's "tough enough" (although I know codes and such would say one needs conduit. Try tell some farmers that, they're not going to be bothered and will just bury it as is.) I at least went a bit further and used conduit. A lot of people in rural areas aren't too bothered 'to do things right'.

putting the norse in conduit opens you up to an overheating problem ,(im not going to harp on about regs etc ,its not my install and i dont have to certify it) .as well as an emf from the ac cable .that induction will cause hassles especially as the amps go up or down .the thing to look at is ./what if \.ive done lots of inspections on plots and farms and yes i know what goes on .the best advise i can give you is seperate them , if only for piece of mind and nothing else .packet loss from interference can be a bugger .

I’m assuming you’re an electrician - it’s been asked before but without answer but I’d be interested to know if a Fibre cable (obviously non conductive) inside a conduit shared by an electrical cable would be considered an issue (assuming plenty of space etc)

The regs say no , as fibre falls outside of the scope and is classified under communications, that will be one of those little grey areas , im sure people do .but as to certifying it , ive never looked at that ill see if i can find anything on it .there is little inherent shock danger ,but untill the regs say yes or somebody has pointed me to that reg i would say no .but also fibre must be capable of carrying a type of power otherwise how are signal amps powered ?unless by a type of solar thing that can convert the pulses to dc .

Fibre cables are typically 1-4 glass fibres of around 9 microns encased in PVC/LSZH/PUR with a cable diameter of 2-3mm - some have steel for strength and rigidity but there are fireproof ANSI/UL compliant non-conductive versions/standards for riser/plenum/general use which surely would be an exception. No electrical signalling required - everything is light sent and received by transceivers on each end. It's intriguing to me as it's essentially a fancy but probably terrible draw cable.

Many factors should be considered including what is being powered by that electrical cable, if the network cable is shielded/foil screened etc, standard of network cable, length of run etc.
 
you do get spacers for that ,you cant run ac and dc together in the same trunking and dc may not be run in metal trunking for solar .i think the spacers are 1 inch to 3 inch .you also shouldnt run any comms cables with ac 220v

i think this is where the dispute comes in its not clear about metal or plastic and DC in SA and standards are a nightmare.

found it under 6.2.8 , never seen that before :
AC / DC Wiring Where a system features DC cables longer than 50m, the cables shall be installed in earthed metal conduit or using armoured cable.
