I don't know what it is, but I was always on the usb to the modem. Now if i change it to ethernet, the iburst icon in the system tray indicates it is not connected to the pc...any help?

You dont need drivers to run ethernet on XP.:D

Yep, that whats nice about ethernet. You dont need to run their crappy software. Just make a Broadband connection under network connections and put in your user/pass and you use that to connect.

It doesn't stop there! IMHO i understand that ethernet will be better, but so far it's definitely not my experience! I have to reset my modem everyday! that's sucks! i never had to do it with usb. Clearly I'm missing some settings or something. Also the connection dies which never used to happen usb. It doesn't disconnect, it just stops sending and receiving...wtf?

This morning it wouldn't even connect! I don't have a clue why...I don't want to restart pc's and reset modems just to connect! :( :(

Could it be of the fact that i don't have a router? Now I'm no network wizard, so can someone give me some pointers?

wonder if this is not a case of bogus MTU settings ???
DrTCP is a MTU config tool

I'm having the same kind of problem, but mine is like every 2nd day.

Could it be the MTU settings that causes this DagegeN?

What does the MTU do anyway?!!?

EDIT: I don't actually restart the modem - I restart my dlink router here and that seems to work.

DrTCP is a MTU config tool

I used it to set it to 1352...that's what i picked up from other threads. That's fine right? Any other stuff that could help?

BTW, i don't think it's my signal, i got it down to 85

I use the ethernet and have no router and don't have any of these problems...

In 5 months I have restarted my modem once... Only to find my wife had disabled the internet connection in XP :D....

I also never changed my MTU setting... Try put it back to normal?

dont get me wrong guys pls .. im no fundi .. but i can only share the info that helped me into solving my problems
See the thing is i had hectic packet losses and i am very far from a tower and my modem kept hanging and had to reset everything every 5 mins ...

so i played around with the MTU settings and i found that for me 1292 is the best setting for performance and packet loss

hope these will help you

and a very slow, spyware laden PC I imagine

The USB connection may work, but it's certainly not the best if you use your UTD like some of us do, for some real work and for shared internet access

Ok, the things you should remember when connecting your iBurst desktop modem via ethernet :

1. Install the correct driver for your ethernet card in XP and check that Windows supports it.

2. Your network card should have auto-sensing capablilities, or otherwise you must change is manually (older cards). My network card is a Marvell 1Gbps card, but your iBurst modem is only 10Mbps. The Marvell card senses that the iBurst modem's speed is only 10Mbps and 'drops down' from 1Gbps to 10Mbps.

3. You need a cross-over cable if you're connecting the iBurst modem directly to your network card.

4. You must assign an IP address to your network card, but not to your iBurst modem (keep iBurst modem on 'obtain an IP address automatically'.

5. Create a new Broadband connection in 'My Network Places'. You're good to go...

*If I have left something out, or made a mistake, please correct me.

Nice help! kk,
1 i think should be fine, but i'll check again.
2 I got a new mobo, so i think it has that ability, will have to check for that though.
3 I think it could be this, can you just say what a cross-over cable is? Is it the one where you can connect directly with a cable from pc to pc? Is the cable supplied from iburst with the modem a cross-over cable? That's the cable i've been using...
4 is done.
5 i forgot to do this, will do

You forgot one thing though, making sure the heater is on... ;)
bloody cold weather.

If you need a cross-over cable, just go to Incredible Corruption, they should have it in stock.

just go to Incredible Corruption

And pay R80-00 for a LAN cable, I think not... Rather go to budget technologies or CTT computers

One chap at CTT computers made me a LAN cable to a specific length for a mere 14 bucks, while I waited :)

That's neat!
but
i got the cable from ibrust with the modem. so it should be a cross-over then. unless ibust rippid me off...nah, they wouldn't, i got F-117's.
