According to a SANRAL advert in last night's paper my quality of life will be improved because my trip home will be shorter.

They then have a map of the roads and they all appear to be exactly the same length as before. How is my trip going to be shorter?

No one else can afford to drive on those roads...

I suspect that if we get some kind of revolt over these e-tolls, the gantries will become the symbol of oppression by the government and will be targeted in a big way by the populus.

Report SANRAL to the ASA !

Just tried that - the ASA website ecomplaint thing crashed - I'll do it again when I get home (seeing as I'll have all this spare time) if it didn't go through.

Besides, they want me to fax them a copy of the advert.

Not sure if thread is serious.

"A short trip" is a valid reference to the amount of time a trip took, so I don't see why "a shorter trip" wouldn't be.

Imagine how Sanral's insurance company must be schitting themselves. If I was them, I'd have quintupled my rates to them already...

Trip wont be shorter (time period) is you have to use william nicol offramps... those things are congested even on the weekend (and a very accident prone area too when people are stuck in the second from left lane for the offramp but want to go straight on the highway).

And the Olifantsfontein N1 north offramp is also not very traffic efficient and has lots of delays...

Sorry, but my 2c, I would report them to the ASA, the problem is that they are implying that the toll gantries will somehow magically make the trip either faster or shorter, it will do neither, as they are basing the statement on the fact that the roads will not be as busy. That is wrong, it implies that a significant portion of the traffic will no longer be on the highway because of the tolls. Can they prove this? have they got empirical data to back it up? No. Because the system is not yet in place, they cannot prove that fewer people will be on the roads, thus leading to a shorter/quicker journey. Its the same as saying that my whizzbang that I want to sell you will make your life better. How do I know this? I don't have any data, but I *PROMISE* it will. Do you think the ASA will shoot that advert down? :-)
