Euro 2012 Thread

Yeah he was off, but if the goal was given it would have stood, even if replays confirmed he was offside initially...just like the replays confirm the ball was over the line. So if FIFA is looking at an electronic system for goal line technology, they might as well look at something for offsides too, particularly during goal scoring plays...to remove that element of human failure.

I think you have just showed why fifa is reluctant to introduce it. Imagine all the reviews for close decisions. it will be unwatchable. it has to be introduced for the goal line though. Nothing else. Just my opinion. That official is totally useless. Fifa idiots.

So Roy's underwhelming England "marches" on....odds on a penalty shoot-out quarter-final against an equally drab Italy?

Yeah that's why I think the offside system should only be used for situations where a goal is scored and there is doubt about whether a player was on or off. A referral system, sort of like in rugby.."is there any reason why the goal should not be awarded?"

Don't ask me how they will implement it though...i'm just here to watch footie and ogle at eastern european blondies :D

I get what you saying but the implementation beyond goal line technology? How far back in the buildup do you go? If the ref doesn't see any infringement and he doesn't refer it, what then? If it's applied consistently it has merit but referees have become so inconsistent so even with these referrals you well still get some stupid decisions...

Insane goal by zlatan. Hate him as a player but loads of ability.

Is it just me or is there no definite winner By the looks of things?.. Like most of the teams that made it through have been average or above average. With the likes of Spain and Germany being top and (from the looks of things) most likely winners... but there hasn't been a team you've gone "wow this team has been excellent, who can stop them!?"

If there's something like "only 3 reviews per term per game" or something like that then you can't review every single decision. It doesn't have to be as bad as you said.

prob go back to the last two players.
The players call for a review.. isn't that what they do in rugby or cricket?

only the ref reviews in rugby when he feels like it. it would then be similar to basketball's 'timeout' feature...but fifa/soccer mafia is dead set against protecting their beautiful game/cash cow

It almost worked for them, they came very close on a few ocassions.

Am I the only 1 who think Spain is like Barcelona, play good football, but complain too much. TBH I haven't watched much of the other games to compare how much the other teams complains. But last night, the Spaniards were like a bunch of pansies. Complaining about the slightest of touches on them. Don't get me wrong, I like there players. But I just got a bit irritated on how much of the time there were on the floor

That is modern football. The Italians, Spaniards and Portuguese are the masters of this ''art'', but it is wide spread. I've even seen Bastian Schweinsteiger do it and that upset me. I expected more of him. Heck, Drogba's impressive frame will fold like a lawn chair under slight contact and he will proceed to cry like a 4-year old that got his finger caught in a door.

I like Spains style of play, but just like parking the bus I do see how that style could be very boring.

Do you remember the last time the Germans met the Spanish? What was the result again? ;)

Yes, I do. I also recall the Germans playing football while the Spanish employed ''anti-football''. They essentially let you play yourself to death and then boom, suckerpunch. I mean, Carles Puyol, the shortest man on the pitch, scores the game-winning header and then they proceeded to suffocate the game. Like I said, effective but highly unattractive. Spainfully boring is a term I recall from 2010. Germany's 4 goal raids on Argentina and England and the thrilling 3-2 win over Uruguay was what football should look like.

Exactly, if you have a set number of reviews per game you'd only have to stop the game 4.5 times and it honestly wouldn't take very long. Once the captain has used up his reviews he can't call for anymore -> the system they use in cricket works well I think.

I'm sure that they could find a way to make the decision making process as quick as possible. On average I don't think that there are that many goal line, or offside decisions where goals are scored per game that would warrant us saying that it would make the game tedious to watch .

Defending is as much a part of the game as attacking is.

Spain holding onto the ball and passing the opposition into exhaustion can be awesome to watch. There is no such thing as anti-football.

Yep If you don't have the ball, you won't score. :D

What is this anti-football people talk about? Everyone has their own definition, there's no such thing! People said what Chelsea did in the CL and what Italy do is anti-football, now you get people saying what Barca and Spain do is anti-football... WTF! It's all about tactics and teams exploiting the other teams weaknesses, it's that simple. yes I get it not everyone likes every style of football, doesn't mean it's not football. Some people defend by keeping the ball and some by being walls. If you concede the least goals you will most likely walk away with at least a point.
