SA doesn't have a monopoly on power issues.

Couple of countries in Europe have been struggling due to cold weather and earlier today something went sideways in a major fashion.

Not yet clear what exactly, but estimated 3-4 GW suddenly went missing. Enough for automatic systems to kick in to catch the drop (@49.8hz). There is some chatter about the Romanian grid no longer being connected/split off & being the cause...unsure whether that's accurate.

Discussion here but it's in German.

Thats a really interesting find, but I am interested in what the impact of that kind of dip would be.
Based on the graph, he is mapping the frequency, and it drops from a pretty stable 50hz, to 49.75, before recovering to 49.85 and recovering over time.

I am not a electrical guy, but is this a notable drop?
What are the impacts of such a small dip?

My understanding is that most electronic devices are within a tolerance range, which would easily absorb this.
Although I agree it is still notable.

Don't we have like 10-15GW or something always missing?
Permanently. Bit easier than it dropping out suddenly though.

Think we have some sharper people on here than me, but as I understand it it's not so much a risk to the devices but rather that you get a cascading failure. i.e. the further the frequency goes off spec the more plants trip out causing it to drop further until nothings left standing.

That's why loadshedding is a thing. If you can't balance it you have to cut someone off

So what I can make out the French produce 88.2GW and expect consumption to rise to 88GW because of the cold

Also...that oke on the twatter has a very nifty live monitoring website.

Anyone know of similar in ZA?

Can't really look at individual countries...entire europe is basically one big grid. It's insane

And usually that sorta balances out but right now it's freezing everywhere (and apparently supposed to get worse)
