Evaporative cooler

Sorry for the necro but thought I'd mention:

Airconditioning remove moisture from the air so ideal for east coast where it's humid. Evaporative coolers work better on the west coast where summers are dry (better than they do on the east coast where there's logically less evaporation due to humidity).

As for 'aircons only cool the air', they also dry it out which can cause dry mucous membranes in the nose and sinuses - mucous membranes catch a lot of the crap you breathe in and so dry air can cause sinus trouble and / or introduce infection.

I have 5 aircons at home and love em. We live on te s/e coast. I'm going to try an evaporative cooler like the sunbeam or Russell Hobbs must fan for my son at Stellies - expecting 39C temperatures this Saturday o_O

Hi guys,

I work in the evaporative cooling industry- if you're interested in finding out more, you can visit our site (www.coolstar.co.za) - we can refer you onto one of our dealers if wish..

All I'll say is that if you're going to invest in an outdoor evap cooler (fitted with ducts etc), don't go for an unknown/chineese brand. When it comes to servicing these units, spare parts are in most cases not available and you land up having to replace the entire evap cooler.

Do you get these coolers thats the same size as an aircon? I would like to install one of these but at R47k its WAY out of my price range. Do you get a smallish version that will cool say a townhouse? How much would that cost or are these only big units for big houses?

I used to wear Ray Bans and pink jocks in my bedroom ..... I thought it was cool .....

..... but my wife insisted we get aircon.

Couldnt live without it to be honest.
