Sorry for the necro but thought I'd mention:
Airconditioning remove moisture from the air so ideal for east coast where it's humid. Evaporative coolers work better on the west coast where summers are dry (better than they do on the east coast where there's logically less evaporation due to humidity).
As for 'aircons only cool the air', they also dry it out which can cause dry mucous membranes in the nose and sinuses - mucous membranes catch a lot of the crap you breathe in and so dry air can cause sinus trouble and / or introduce infection.
I have 5 aircons at home and love em. We live on te s/e coast. I'm going to try an evaporative cooler like the sunbeam or Russell Hobbs must fan for my son at Stellies - expecting 39C temperatures this Saturday
