The Game has change in such a way that it has become very new player friendly.
More importantly they have revamp many of the skill sets to make playing a lot easier. This is the largest online single-shard game bar none. Watch the video, these are actual player, every ship you see is controlled by a player.

That video has me playing again :) I thought it was a fantastic illustration of the game. I can watch that vid over and over.

I'm part of a nullsec alliance at the moment but haven't participated in any large scale fights yet. Getting there though :)

Eve Online is a thinking man's game though. Not for everyone, but certainly easier to get into now than ever before. I hope it keeps on going at this rate.

Proud CVA Scrub myself :) Didnt play for a few months now but still training. Been in quite a few fights with over 1000 people and its great fun. We have 300 man fleets roaming every night.

But once Elite Dangerous is out I will probably not go back to Eve any more and then when Star Citizen comes I can kiss my life goodbye :)

What is a "single-shard" ?

Everyone is on the same server, in the same "instance."

There are typically 3 types of MMO server/shard breakdowns:
- Multiple Servers, single shard (think World of Warcraft, Rift etc.)
- Single server, multiple shards (think Guild Wars 1 where you could be in the same place, but you could be in different shards so you cannot see eachother.)
- Single server, single shard (Eve...you could have every player in the game in one system, and you'd be able to see them all)

At least that's my understanding of it.

It means there is only 1 server not like wow thats got 30 servers "shards" to play on. There are actually 2 servers for Eve Online, one is in China and only the Chinese can play there and then there is the other server for the rest of the world.

History Fact: The word Shard comes from Ultima Online where they had lore where the planet was broken into different shards "servers" and each shard is a different dimension to the original one with potential of thousands ...

Here is a the video intro for Ultima Online

The game looks exciting, but when they show the menus and ship building bit it reminded me of how steep a learning curve there is to play that game. I just dont think I have the energy...

If only I had the time to play again. I loved this game to bits but it took a ton of time and dedication to really enjoy it.

Yeah the learning in this game is endless and can be daunting. For a casual player I'd advise sticking to Hi-Sec zones and setting smaller goals. The goals are as big as you make them :) plus there are a lot of corporations with players who prioritize real life over the game so are understanding and plan accordingly.

Also with the clone upgrades removed, skill research 24 hour limit removed and inclusion of ship mastery levels (To make piloting a ship and its kit a lot easier to put together) and ISIS it makes visualizing your progress a lot easier. Plus there are new tutorials out for new players, I haven't seen them but apparently offer a lot of info.

I really wish I had the time to learn this game, but yeah, its just too hectic a curb for me to take so much time out with. Perhaps one day when I have a week or two spare I can look at learning this game. Anyways, looks awesome, have fun :D

You have to decide on priorities. A good corp can teach you the right skills to train for whatever you want to do.
Skill training can be queued up for as long as you like. Basic core skills take about two months but you can be up and fighting in less than 24 hours. You do not have to be in-game to be training the skills. They have changed a lot of things. No cost to pod deaths etc make it easy for new players to start making a difference.
I have chased and killed or been thwarted in trying to kill two week old new players deep in null sec. Something that I can assure you was literally unheard of say six months ago. and when I mean new players, I mean real new players, playing the game for the first time.
Make no mistake the game is tough. But it is one of the only MMO's that South African's can play where our horrendous international pings do not count against us. Xmas holidays are almost here, give it a whirl. PM any of the regular players and I am sure they can point you in the right direction as to a starter corp.

Problem with Elite and Dangerous is that it is basically a single player game with a little bit of multiplayer. Most of the game is single player. And obviously the other problem is lag. Our ping's are going to affect multiplayer... But yes Elite and dangerous is on my Christmas list :)

Another good thing about EVE is that when you are up and running and able to make a good amount of ISK, you can buy your game time with it. Been a while since I played but last game time I bought was about 300mil ISK

Really I have been playing in their persistent universe since February with no issue. Elite Dangerous is 1 game there is nothing called Elite and Dangerous ?

Its quite obvious that you didnt play the game at all yet. At this moment I can log into the Persistent Universe "Multiplayer Server". Lag is a non issue as well and since Feb this year not once affected my game in any way.

When people refer to Eve Online as a "spreadsheet game" they ain't lying. As a industrial char trading minerals to make isk for my corp, I had spreadsheets dedicated to this task.

My proudest moment was getting my high-spec industrial char and a Hulk full of goodies out of lowsec safely! :D

But, that was after losing a shuttle and being podded after getting caught in a bubble while scouting exit routes! But the cool thing about that was talking to the pirate that shot me about all things arrrrr! ;)

I would go back to Eve Online tomorrow, but simply can't dedicate the time anymore to truly get the most out of it.

"I think one thing that is a bit confusing is people equate multiplayer to MMO in this sort of game - and right now there's no such thing as group quests or anything
You can meet up with people, battle other ships together and that sort of thing, but there's no explicit multiplayer group controls"
This is from a player of the game, not me. You cannot compare Elite Dangerous with Eve. One is a Massive Multiplayer Online (MMO) game and the other is a basic single-player game set in a "Online controlled universe."
That does not mean it is not on my shopping list as a great game to buy. But you will never ever see a 2000 strong player vs player battle in it. Even a 250 strong one, something that is quite common theses days in Eve. I think I came off harsh at being too critical of a game I have not as yet played. But the two from my understanding and yes I have spoken to players who own the game are like chalk and cheese

Not quite following the quote. I've been part of a 1000+ battle in Eve. With proper FC's, it's extremely intense and really great when multiple fleets work well together and we're talking about coordinating that many people with simple tools like teamspeak and ventrello.

*sigh* I miss that game. And the old peeps.

Greetz to any old Morsus Mihi members.

Except EVE is no longer single shard with them now running a Chinese server for them it's now a multi server setup like wow

No, it's single shard. The Chinese server is it's own world, it does not cross into the main tranquility cluster.
